The Taiwanese Association of Madison-WI (威斯康星州麥城台灣同鄉會) is a regional chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America (TAA), the national umbrella organization for Taiwanese American community associations across the United States. The chapter serves the Taiwanese and Taiwanese American community in and around Madison, Wisconsin, and is listed under the TAA’s Midwest region (美中西).

Timeline / Role in the Community

  • TAA’s own community-history page for the chapter is held in the corpus: Taiwanese Association of Madison 麥城台灣同鄉會 (TAH, 2014-10-12).
  • Madison was one of the 28 founding chapters of the Taiwanese Association of America, per TAA co-founder Mu-Sheng Wu’s memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys76-eng|TAH #76]] — the founding chapter’s president was Li-yuan Huang.
  • The May Flower journal (later TAA’s official organ, 1973–1980) was published in Madison from 1971-07-01, per the same memoir — evidence of the chapter’s early role in the Taiwanese-consciousness movement.
  • Pre-chapter activity: Taiwanese students at Madison ran prayer/Bible-study groups and hosted the first 基督徒夏令會 at Wisconsin Dells (recalled by 謝伯芳 in [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys-369|TAH #369]], 2021) — the names 劉真真, 陳紹紀, 鄭學禮 are credited with the Madison preparation.
  • Community legacy in Madison continues via the UW-M 台灣布袋戲團, founded 1997 out of the UW-M 台灣同學會 and profiled in [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys277|TAH #277 他們這樣愛台灣 (朱靜女, 2017)]]; the troupe performed annually at Celebrate Madison International Festival from 2003.
  • Predecessor student organizing at UW-M is also recorded as a standalone corpus history: 346. History of FORMOSAN Club at Madison, Wisconsin (2019); Madison’s Taiwanese cultural scene is further chronicled in 53. TAIWANESE CULTURE IN MADISON 台灣文化在麥城 (2016) — both bibliography-only records, full text in the vault.
  • Founding of the predecessor student club, from 周烒明’s A-band memoir: early 1963 UW students first registered as 「UW Formosan Student Club 威大台灣同學會」, blocked by KMT professional students who claimed a student club already existed; after public debate in the Student Senate argued by 利騰俊 (who traced the name Formosa and the 台灣 etymology to 台南安平平埔族的「台灣社」), the Senate recognized the cultural distinction and accepted the application. Charter completed 1963-10-02 (dues US$1/semester), official registration at the student center 1963-10-19 as 「The Formosan Club of the University of Wisconsin 威大台灣同鄉會」, with 周烒明醫師 as faculty advisor — 2014-12.
  • Madison as a movement gathering point: after 周烒明 married 吳秀惠 at Madison (1959), the Zhou household — the only married student couple on campus — became the meeting place for 「認同台灣」 students (Taiwan songs, food, language); 田弘茂 was later dispatched to the Manhattan, Kansas chapter to promote campus registration — same memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys81|TAH #81]].
  • HOLD: naming variant — this page carries 威斯康星州麥城台灣同鄉會; the corpus record titles the chapter 麥城台灣同鄉會 (no 州). Not auto-merged.
  • Corpus re-grep (麥城 / Madison, works+articles, 2026-09-20 slice-13 pass): new hits are the two Madison culture/club histories above (now linked); no memoir mention adds chapter-officer or event facts beyond what is recorded here.
  • Corpus re-grep (2026-09-22, deepen-x slice 09211400-1, vault-only): the only additional Madison hit is Chi-Ming Tseng — Madison appears only as the affiliation of prof. Hung-mao Tien (田弘茂), invited to the Minnesota chapter’s 1991 「Taiwanese Politics」 forum. Cross-chapter personnel link (田弘茂 also appears in the UW-M organizing account above per TAH #81); no chapter-officer or event facts for Madison itself. Verify-saturated.
