The Taiwan Hotel & Motel Association of North America is a national umbrella organization uniting Taiwanese American hoteliers across the United States. It was founded on June 11, 2005, in Los Angeles, California, growing out of collaborative efforts between the Taiwan Hotel/Motel Association of Southern California and the Taiwan Innkeepers Association of Greater Houston. The Association’s goal is to unite the strength of Taiwanese hoteliers by facilitating the exchange of knowledge and operational experience. It currently encompasses member associations in California, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and New Jersey.
Role in the Community
From the community record:
- The hoteliers’ network predates the national umbrella: the 旅館公會 (hoteliers’ association) was one of twelve Taiwanese American groups that jointly mailed the 1990 US census campaign letter to ~12,000 Taiwanese households on July 30, 1989, alongside TAA, TACL, FAPA, TCCCNA, the Human Rights Association, NATMA, NATPA, and NATWA ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys253|Our Journeys #253]]).
- The founding Southern California chapter runs community-facing programs documented in the corpus: a summer on-the-job training camp for Taiwan hotel/restaurant-management students (63. 台灣餐旅系學員美國暑假在職訓練營) and a charity golf tournament / friendship match (Charity Golf Tournament 慈善高爾夫球友誼賽); its own directory record is at TAH directory entry.
- The Association’s own 2017 TAH directory record documents the national body (directory entry).
- The Southern California chapter (南加州台灣旅館業同業公會) is recorded as the first Taiwanese American business-field organization, directory entry 08/1974 (261. First T.A. organization in Business Field); its activities are documented in 南加州台灣旅館業同業公會的活動.
- The hoteliers’ network’s standing in the community is recorded in the Taiwan Center preparatory-committee memoir, where Kenjohn Wang is credited with founding the Taiwan Hotel-Motel Association to protect local Taiwanese business welfare ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys29-eng|Our Journeys #29]]). HOLD: memoir credits the founding to Kenjohn Wang vs. this page’s 2005 LA founding by the SoCal/Greater Houston chapters — not auto-merged.
- The Southern California chapter’s own newsletter is held in the corpus as a periodical record — 《旅館通訊》(南加州台灣旅館業同業公會, Dec 1997) (1997-12).
- Chapter member memory: the pioneer-businessman profile of hotelier 蔡金裕「經營旅館業當開路先鋒」, published by the SoCal chapter 2017-06 (552. 蔡金裕經營旅館業當開路先鋒).
- The business milieu the umbrella later organised is preserved in the Taiwan Community Credit Union memoir: by the mid-1970s many Los Angeles emigrants had invested in the motel business and apartment ownership, and hotel operator 王桂榮 (whose Holiday Inn hosted the credit union’s monthly meetings as 社長) is recalled as the community’s successful 旅館業者 banker-of-last-resort for fellow Taiwanese — evidence the hoteliers’ cohort was a backbone of 1970s LA community finance, decades before the 2005 national body ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys244|Our Journeys #244 — 台灣人信用合作社往事]]).
