Taiwan Hotel & Motel Association of Southern California (南加州台灣旅館業同業公會)

Identity Snapshot

  • English: Taiwan Hotel & Motel Association of Southern California
  • Chinese: 南加州台灣旅館業同業公會
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

The Taiwan Hotel & Motel Association of Southern California was established in 1974 to unite Taiwanese hoteliers and hotel-related businesses in the United States. The Association serves its members by providing education and information on the hospitality industry, including symposia and training courses led by industry experts. Annual events such as the annual banquet, Christmas dinner, and golf tournament foster networking and community bonds among members. In 1999, board members organized an interest-free loan drive to purchase a permanent association hall, giving the organization a stable home. The Association has grown to become a recognized pillar of the Southern California Taiwanese immigrant community.

Role in the Community

Corpus records in the TAH collection document the Association’s activity and standing:

  • The Association’s own TAH directory record is preserved in the corpus: THMASC 目錄記錄.
  • Founded 08/1974 — the TAH album record calls it the first Taiwanese American organization in the business field (第一個台美人商業團體): [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ff261|TAH #261 南加州台灣旅館業同業公會 / First T.A. organization in Business Field]].
  • Hosted the 台灣餐旅系學員美國暑假在職訓練營 (summer on-the-job training camp in the U.S. for Taiwanese hotel/restaurant-management students), 2016: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/12-63|TAH #63 訓練營]].
  • Runs the Charity Golf Tournament 慈善高爾夫球友誼賽, documented 2018: Charity Golf Tournament by THMASC.
  • Operates within a wider network: the corpus also records the parent umbrella body 北美洲台灣旅館公會聯合總會 (Taiwan Hotel & Motel Association of North America): THMANA.
  • Published its own newsletter, 《旅館通訊》, by at least 12/1997: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/publications387|TAH #387 南加州台灣旅館業同業公會-旅館通訊(1997/12 雜誌)]]; the corpus also holds a separate newsletter record: 06).
  • Community activity record: 02) — a dedicated TAH story record of the Association’s activities.
  • First president: the TAH album record [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ff262|TAH #262 蔡金裕 / 南加州台灣旅館業同業公會創會會長 / 1974]] names 蔡金裕 (J. Y. Tsai) as the founding president (創會會長), corroborating the 30th-anniversary account below; his Who’s Who entry is [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whos-who-2061-j-y-tsai|TAH #2061 J. Y. Tsai 蔡金裕 (2018)]].
  • Second president: 王桂榮 (Kenjohn Wang) served as the Association’s second president HOLD: the 台灣會館 memoir credits 王桂榮 with having founded the 旅館公會, while the guild’s own record calls him its second president — both retained; likely “founded” reflects his formative leadership role, not the 1974 convener seat held by 蔡金裕.
  • Founding convener 陳銓仁 (ROYAL INN owner, pharmacist) is documented in the corpus as C. J. Chen 陳銓仁 — Who’s Who [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whoswho1033|TAH #1033 C. J. Chen 陳銓仁 (2016)]] — and separately as the first president of the Los Angeles Taiwanese American Association ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/180-e9-99-b3-e9-8a-93-e4-bb-81-e6-b4-9b-e6-9d-89-e7-a3-af-e5-8f-b0-e7-81-a3-e5-9|TAH #180 陳銓仁 / 洛杉磯台灣同鄉會第一任會長 / 1968–1971]]), situating him as a cross-organizational founder figure; he also appears among the founders of the Southern California Taiwanese Federal Credit Union ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys244|Our Journeys #244]]).
  • Movement lineage: the 台灣會館 founding memoir credits 王桂榮 (Kenjohn Wang) with having “first founded the Taiwan Hotel Guild and the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce” before endowing the Taiwanese American Foundation — the memoir’s Southern California context (Rosemead estate donation) points to this Association; recorded as movement-lineage context at [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys29|TAH #29 南加州台灣會館開創的史料]].
  • Civic mobilization: the 旅館公會 was one of twelve社团 (with TAA, TACL, FAPA, TCCCNA, NATMA, NATPA, NATWA, 客家會, 文藝協會, 學生會 等) that jointly wrote to ~12,000 Taiwanese households in the U.S. in support of the census campaign, as recalled in the memoir corpus: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys253|TAH #253 Our Journeys 回憶錄]].

Founding history (from the Association’s own account)

The Association’s 30th-anniversary memoir (三十週年紀念專輯, 2005), preserved verbatim in the corpus, documents the founding in detail: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys295|TAH #295 南加州台灣旅館業同業公會的歷史與成長 (A)]]

  • On 08/13/1974, 陳銓仁 — a pharmacist and owner of the ROYAL INN — wrote to Taiwanese co-ethnic entrepreneurs as the representative of the 南加州臺灣協會, proposing a motel association; the founding meeting convened 08/17/1974 at the Los Angeles Taiwanese Presbyterian Church (洛杉磯長老教會), prompted by 許錦鉻牧師 and ~30–40 operators attended. Consistent with the TAH album’s 08/1974 founding date.
  • 蔡金裕, already an experienced motel operator, was chosen as the meeting’s convener (召集人); his pioneer story is recorded at [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/mystories552|TAH #552 蔡金裕經營旅館業當開路先鋒]]. The founding body is described as 全美第一個商業性的專業公會 — the first business-field professional association of Taiwanese Americans (matches the TAH #261 album claim).
  • Sister relationships (姐妹會) established with 高雄市旅館業同業公會, 台北市旅館同業公會, 美南台灣旅館業同業公會 (THMAGH 休士頓美南台灣旅館公會, founded 1991, which reciprocally records the sister tie to this Association), the American Hotel & Lodging Association, and the California Hotel & Lodging Association; the Association also drove the effort to organize the 全美台灣旅館公會聯合會 (a nationwide body; the regional umbrella THMANA is already linked above).
  • Landmark event: hosted the 13th 世界華商觀光聯誼會議 in September 1992 at the Hilton next to Disneyland, attended by nearly 500 Chinese-business delegates from Taiwan and around the world.
  • The 2005-anniversary account of annual symposia/training classes, banquets, Christmas dinners, and golf tournaments matches the existing record above; the website/資訊服務 expansion is new-era detail.
