  • English: Taiwanese American Center of Northern California
  • Chinese: 北加州台灣會館
  • Era: Contemporary
  • Geography: Taiwanese American community
  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

The Taiwanese American Center of Northern California (北加州台灣會館, TAC) is a non-profit community organization founded in 2003 to serve as a gathering place and resource center for Taiwanese Americans in the San Francisco Bay Area. Based in San Jose, the center operates out of an 8,600-square-foot facility in the Silicon Valley area and provides a wide range of educational, cultural, and civic programs.

Role in the Community

Primary community memoir N. CA Taiwanese American Center Dream Comes True (May-Sing Chang) records the founding: after moving to the Bay Area in 1988, May-Sing Chang and her husband gathered like-minded friends — Te-hui Chen, Chun Chiu, Tien-mo Lin, David Weng, Ching C. Shir, Tien-tun Shih, Kuang-po Chen, Hwalin Lee, and Davis Chang — and founded Northern California’s first public Taiwanese American Center in Fremont in March 2003 (2,800 sq ft), later outgrown by the current larger center. The building gave the community a fixed place for meetings, cultural programs, and consolidation of community force.

HOLD: founding place — the TAH directory entry describes the San Jose / Silicon Valley facility, while the founder memoir places the 2003 founding in Fremont (likely a later relocation; not merged). The corpus also places events in Newark, CA (14th anniversary, 2016-12-10 — see Timeline), so multiple Bay Area locations appear in the record; not merged.

2026-09-20 re-grep: NEW absorbable corpus records — the band-A founder memoir May-Sing Chang, 2014 (companion to the 53 memoir above, written from founding), the activity record 北加州台灣會館的活動, 2019, and the Taiwan School program record Taiwan School by TACNC, 2015 — the center ran a Taiwanese language school, its main educational program. A second 年刊 catalog record exists: 724. 北加州台灣會館2007年刊 (same 2007 年刊 as the 380 record already below).

Founding detail from the community chronicle 2003年北加州台灣會館成立 (ZH twin: 38. 2003年北加州台灣會館成立): at the 2003 Lunar New Year banquet, president Davis Chang (張祿生) launched the center fundraising campaign and raised $30,000; a preparatory committee was formed on 2003-02-16 with Shinn-Sheng Chang (張信行) as convener and Davis Chang, Te-hui Chen, Kuang-po Chen, Hwalin Lee, Tien-mo Lin, Tien-tun Shih, Ching C. Shir, and David Weng as members. Kuang-po Chen served as Secretary-General; May-Sing Chang, Shu-chen Kao, and Yeh-chin each took charge of administrative, program, and financial tasks. Events began May 1, and the center soon hosted more than 40 events a month — “a major breakthrough for the Northern California Taiwanese community.” The founder list reconciles with the 53 memoir above (same committee; the chronicle adds convener Shinn-Sheng Chang and the $30,000 banquet fundraiser detail).

The center also appears as the subject of its own records: the 2014 feature Taiwanese American Center of Northern California, 2014-10-12 and the 2015 photo album 41. TACNC photo album, 2015-01. In 2018-08 it published the concert handbook 1244. 樂見台灣 — 蕭泰然紀念音樂會手冊, and its 2010 年刊 has a twin catalog record 725. 北加州台灣會館2010年刊 (same year as the 383 record below).

The center’s two principal promoters are profiled together in the community feature Yang Ningyin, 2014-09-05: Shinn-Sheng Chang 張信行 (convener of the 2003-02-16 preparatory committee) and May-Sing Chang 黃美星 (co-founder, author of the 53 memoir) are named as 台灣會館主要推手 — the main driving forces behind the center.

HOLD: the San Jose facility address — a 2014-07-03 taiwanjustice notice for a Bay Area community-groups lecture lists the venue as 聖荷西台灣會館, 4413 Fortran Ct., San Jose, CA 95134 (台美人消息: 太陽花學運學生參訪團拜訪灣區, 2014-07), the first explicit street address for the San Jose location in the corpus; it corroborates the TAH directory’s San Jose description but is not merged with the founder memoir’s Fremont 2003 founding.

Taiwan School, the center’s main educational program, also appears in the taiwaneseamerican.org directory of community resources for Taiwanese American families Community Resources for Taiwanese American Parents and Families: in-person enrichment classes for kids and youth (Taiwanese or Mandarin) plus virtual adult courses ranging from Beginner Taiwanese (Taigi) to Taigi Reading Club and a Taiwanese History Book Club.

Timeline

From the record

  • 2018-08-08 — Stephanie’s personal account “Passing on the Taiwanese Language: A Personal Account” (taiwaneseamerican.org), on a second-generation parent’s search for Taiwanese-language instruction for her children, lists the center’s Taiwan School as the sole San Francisco Bay Area entry in its nationwide resource list — “San Francisco bay area: Taiwan School of Taiwanese American Center of Northern California” — i.e. as of 2018 the center’s language school was indexed as the region’s reference point for Taiwanese (Taigi) classes alongside the LA, San Diego, Houston, Atlanta, and DC programs: Passing on the Taiwanese Language, 2018-08-08.
