Senior Taiwanese Association of Northern California (北加州台灣長輩會)
Identity Snapshot
- English: Senior Taiwanese Association of Northern California
- Chinese: 北加州台灣長輩會
- Era: Contemporary
- Geography: Taiwanese American community
- Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)
The Senior Taiwanese Association of Northern California is a nonprofit service organization founded in 1981 to serve elderly Taiwanese Americans in the greater Northern California region, including Sacramento, San Francisco, Tracy, Concord, Livermore, and Danville. Membership has grown from a handful of founding members to over 500, making it the largest senior Taiwanese organization in the Bay Area with the most active event calendar. The association provides physical, mental, and spiritual wellness activities for retired seniors, including tai chi, karaoke, hiking, and day trips, as well as major annual events for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Double Ninth Festival, and an annual general meeting. It also participates in broader community events such as the 228 Memorial Concert, cultural festivals, National Day celebrations, and the San Jose Veterans Day Parade. The organization publishes a monthly newsletter and an annual directory, and produces health and wellness publications to promote member wellbeing.

Role in the Community
Absorbed 2026-09-14 from the movement record (our memoirs, not press-kit):
- The Bay Area senior movement grew out of the Taiwanese church’s community-service work: 陳隆, hired late 1976 as community-service officer of the 灣區台灣人社區服務中心 (church-affiliated), helped elders from Taiwan settle and organized their first long-distance trip to Southern California with ~20 elders in April 1978, sealing a sister-association tie with the 南加州台灣長輩会 (absorbed from 2019).
- HOLD: founding date conflict — the TAH directory states founded 1981, but our own memoirs give earlier, more specific milestones: 何義麟 records 陳隆 assisting elders to form 台灣長輩會 on 1978-03-11, while the association’s own history by 莊麗華 says the organization 孕育成形 in 1979 as an 老人會 founded at 台灣基督教會 with 陳錦川 first president and 彭笑生 general secretary, renamed 北加州台灣長輩會 on 1981-08-08 (president 許基隆, third) and registered with California 1981-10-29. Not auto-merged: 1978/1979 likely reflect the informal 老人會 stage; 1981 is the incorporation.
- The 南加州長輩會 it sistered with was founded by 陳隆’s father 陳夢蘭 — the Northern California association was, in effect, a transplanted replica of the LA founding family’s organization (per 何義麟).
- Later institutional record per 莊麗華’s own history (2017): annual 長輩的生活智慧 publication series (eight volumes by 2010, e.g. 長輩的生活智慧 1995), 30th-anniversary special issue 800. 北加州台灣長輩會三十週年紀念特刊 (2012), own website from 2010, activities centered at the 南灣文教中心 Milpitas site from 2015.
- 陳文雄 served as 名譽會長 from 1988 for nearly thirty years, described as the association’s perennial pillar and chief patron (per 莊麗華). His own 2016 message 2016 — written from his vantage in the association — recalls “三十五年來” of service, thanks 莊會長 (莊麗華) and the successive 理監事 teams, and credits the 文教中心 for providing the activity site.
- Cross-reference: in 1988 the TACL fundraiser for Rep. Masioli’s census campaign (64 同鄉 initiators, ~300 attendees) was held at a “台灣人長輩會公寓” venue (per TACL census memoir). HOLD: venue attribution — that memoir’s narrative runs through LA/TACL circles, so the venue is likely the Southern California 長輩會 property, not this NorCal association; kept as a cross-reference only, not absorbed as a NorCal fact.
- Federated membership: after its founding the association joined the 北加州臺灣同鄉組織聯合會 (founded 1973-09-22, whose later entrants included 長輩會 and 婦女會) — see 北加州同鄉聯合會與灣區教會史.
- HOLD: founding-date corroboration — two internal records count back to 1981: the 20th-anniversary special issue 01) and 陳文雄’s “三十五年” framing in 2016, both consistent with the 1981 incorporation rather than the 1978/1979 informal 老人會 stage noted above.
- Full vault footprint of the association’s own publications: 長輩的生活智慧 series volumes 1–8 — 1995 第一輯, 1996 第二輯, 1999 第三輯, 2002 第四輯, 2005 第五輯, 2008 第六輯, 2010 第七輯, 2010 第八輯 — plus health titles |342. 長輩的身體健康 (2009) and |343. 實用自我健康照護手冊 (2009).
- Peer record: the sister org in LA has its own activity record at |2. Activities of Taiwanese-America Seniors Association of Southern California.
- First-person participation memoir: 陳桂蘭’s 2017 recollection of taking part in the association’s life — 2017 (bibliographic record; full text in vault). 陳桂蘭 is otherwise known in the corpus as the NATWA 點心擔 column editor (see Sue Chiu / Mei Lu pages); no separate person page exists for her.
