Taiwanese American Organization at UC Davis

The Taiwanese American Organization (TAO) at UC Davis is a cultural and social student organization focused on serving Taiwanese Americans and others interested in Taiwanese culture on the UC Davis campus. TAO was founded in approximately 2011 — the name TAO was chosen because “TASA” was already in use at Davis by the Thai American Student Association. The organization adopted the TAO name, a variant used at other UC campuses such as UC Irvine, where the model originated. TAO’s founding at Davis followed the involvement of a student leader with the West Coast ITASA network in 2011.
Corpus Check (deepen-x 09170900-21)
SKIP-with-reason: corpus scan found only incidental UC Davis mentions predating this club (e.g. the 10th WFTA annual meeting hosted at UC Davis in 1983 by TAFNC — a different, older event unrelated to TAO, founded ~2011). No primary material about TAO itself; nothing absorbable without inventing history. The page’s own claim that “TASA” was already taken links to the existing Davis campus pages below.
Role in the Community (deepen-x 09180900-24)
- Absorbed: the community newsletter records an event run by the club — “Shaved Ice Night” at UC Davis, 2013-03-13, published in taiwaneseamerican.org: Shaved Ice Night with TAO at UC Davis. This corroborates that TAO was active on the Davis campus by March 2013, consistent with the ~2011 founding claim on this page (no conflict to HOLD).
- Further event records absorbed (deepen-x 09210700-25), extending the documented activity trail from 2012 through 2014 — the club ran a recurring social/cultural event calendar on campus:
- Join TAO for a Shaved Ice Night at UC Davis, CA (2012-05-02) — earliest Davis TAO event record in the corpus, pushing documented activity back to May 2012.
- UC Davis TAO Hosts First General Meeting (2013-10-02) — records an organizational (first general meeting) milestone, not just social events.
- TAO Tang Yuan Night at UC Davis (2013-11-12).
- TAO’s Got Talent Performance at UC Davis (2014-05-06; duplicate record here — duplicate listing in source, no conflict to HOLD).
Corpus re-scan 2026-09-21 (deepen-x slice 09200700-23): re-scanned works/ and articles/ — remaining “taiwanese-american-organization” hits are generic TAH bibliography records (TA O t-shirt listings, TAAMN, 2015 community news roundup, newsletter summary table), none about this Davis club. SKIP-deepen; nothing new absorbable. Corpus re-scan 2026-09-22 (deepen-x slice 09220400-3): fresh grep — only new candidate hits (video-asian-choral-festival, concerts26, ourjourneys247, photo-albums-activities 19/96) contain no Davis/TAO context; hit set saturated. SKIP-deepen.
