The Taiwanese American Society at Yale (TAS) is an undergraduate student organization at Yale University dedicated to promoting awareness of the cultural, political, and social aspects of Taiwanese American culture and fostering the broader Asian American community on campus. Founded in 1991 as the Taiwanese Club, the organization was later renamed the Yale College Taiwanese American Society to reflect the Taiwanese American identity of its membership. TAS is a member of Yale’s Pan-Asian Council and is listed among the internal organizations of the Asian Network at Yale.
Role in the Community
- Corpus scan found no memoir mentions of the club itself (founded 1991). Pre-history of the Taiwanese student community at Yale it grew out of: during the 台獨聯盟 “自由長征” campus tours (1967), Yale’s 陳隆志 and 陳東壁 were recruited as盟員 — see Our Journeys 81; Yale-affiliated theology students 鄭義勇 and 林天民 also featured in the 美東夏令會 network — see Our Journeys 268.
- 1991 — Yale sent representatives among the ~twenty schools (Harvard, Columbia, U Penn, Smith, Rutgers, NYU) at the founding ITASA “seeds” meeting at Columbia, the intercollegiate Taiwanese network that campus clubs like TAS joined — see Inspire, Empower, and Activate: ITASA’s Coming of Age (Winston Yang’s recollection).
- 1999/02 — A Yale University chapter entry appears in the 台美大學生跨校際協會 (ITASA) 1999 handbook, documenting the Yale campus chapter within the intercollegiate network — see Yale University.
- 2014 — ITASA alumni events were hosted at Yale, evidencing an active alumni layer around the campus club — see ITASA 2014 Alumni Events at Yale.
- Oral-history pre-history detail: at the 金龍少棒 William Porter (威廉波特) game, where the 台獨聯盟 unfurled its Team of Taiwan banner, the 發言人 was 耶魯大學的博士陳隆志 — same Yale recruit as above — 羅福全口述, band A, recorded 2014-11-09.
- 2026-09-23 re-scan (deepen-x slice 09221200-8): fresh Yale/耶魯 grep across works/ + articles/ surfaces only already-linked pages (ourjourneys81, 268, 556, ITASA works) plus the above ourjourneys62 William Porter detail; no mention of TAS itself. Nothing else absorbable; verified saturated.
- 2026-09-22 deepen-x slice 09220400-15: SKIP — verified saturated. Broad grep (台美社) matched only generic phrases (台美社區獎學金, 台美社團) in ourjourneys303/53/231/12/323/footsteps-4; zero actual Yale/耶魯 mentions in those files. Existing Role-in-the-Community (1967 自由長征 台獨聯盟 recruitment, 1991 ITASA founding, 1999 handbook chapter entry, 2014 alumni events) already covers all corpus-linked Yale material; nothing new absorbable.
- 2014-02-13 — ITASA East Coast Conference held at Yale (distinct event record alongside the 2014 alumni events above), evidencing the Yale campus/alumni layer hosting intercollegiate gatherings — see 2014 ITASA East Coast Conference at Yale.
- 2026-09-25 re-scan (deepen-x slice 09240600-4): fresh 台美社/耶魯/Yale grep across works/+articles/ — hit-set identical to prior passes (generic 台美社區/台美社團 matches in footsteps-4; Yale-persona records 268, 556 handbook, ITASA works; #312 match is a generic 台美社區 phrase). No TAS first-party memoir; verified saturated; SKIP-deepen.
- 2026-09-24 re-scan (deepen-x slice 09230600-9): fresh Yale/耶魯 + TAS grep across works/ + articles/ — one new absorbable hit (2014 East Coast conference record, added above); remaining hits (ourjourneys61/62/81/268, 556 handbook, ITASA works) already linked or Yale-persona pre-history. No TAS first-party memoir; verified saturated beyond above.
