The Taiwanese American Student Association (TASA) at the University of Maryland, College Park is a social and cultural student organization dedicated to celebrating Taiwanese culture on campus. Open to students of all backgrounds, TASA welcomes anyone with curiosity or passion for Taiwanese culture and holds general body meetings weekly during the academic year. The organization is registered on UMD’s official club platform, TerpLink, and is recognized as part of the university’s APIDA student organizations.

Role in the Community

  • Founding identity: UMD TASA is on record as the place where members discovered their Taiwanese identity — computer-science graduate Jonathan Chen (later FiscalNote co-founder) credits joining UMD’s TASA for that turn and notes most of his friends today came through TASA — see Interview: Jonathan Chen (TaiwaneseAmerican.org).
  • Community events: co-hosted a Taiwanese Night Market event on the University of Maryland campus, documented 2012-04-13 — see Taiwanese Night Market with University of Maryland’s TASA.
  • Broader Taiwanese-campus activity at UMD predates/parallels TASA’s current chapter: a Night Market at University of Maryland was documented 2011-04-29 (record), a year before the 2012 TASA-attributed event; also Taiwanese Movie Festival 2011 — record; Asian American Literature Symposium 2010 — record. Authorship of these events is not attributed to TASA in the records — no merge made.
  • Founding memory (first-hand): in 楊遠薰’s 2017-09-16 essay 「台美人的未來」, co-founder Steve Hsu (許智恆) recalls returning to Taiwan the summer after his freshman year, coming back with a passion for Taiwan, and co-founding 「台美學生會」(TASA) at UMD (馬大) with classmates in his sophomore year, recruiting eagerly — and immediately hitting a wall when a Taiwan-born, US-raised classmate refused to join any “TA” organization, insisting he was Chinese American. Hsu also recounts that the club’s “TA” name was itself stigmatized as 綠派/台獨 and boycotted during the sharp 藍綠 polarization of the mid-2000s (「十餘年前」 per the 2017 article — founding era inferred mid-2000s, no exact date in the record); he later co-founded Taiwanese American Professionals (TAP) in the DC area (台美人的未來(上)/楊遠薰 (TWJ), record also mirrored 2024-05-27 (TWJ reprint)). This memoir predates and supplements the directory’s contemporary-chapter snapshot above.
  • Re-grep 2026-09-21 (slice 09201500-9): broadened grep (TAUSA / UMD / College Park / 馬里蘭) against works + articles returned only the FAPA Maryland chapter record FAPA 台灣人公共事務會馬里蘭州分會 (a 2015 chapter directory entry, no TASA link stated — not absorbed) and generic ITASA/TASA lists from other campuses. No new UMD TASA memoir material; page saturated.
  • Re-check (slice deepen-x-slice-09230317-5, 2026-09-23): fresh re-grep (TASA / 馬里蘭 / Maryland) — no UMD-specific memoir hits. The TASA-name hit set is the intercollegiate umbrella record 46. History of ITASA 台美大學生跨校際協會的簡介 (now linked as context for the campus-”TA” student-body lineage; its body names no UMD chapter) plus mailing-address/geography mentions in ourjourneys266/152/157/173-eng — unrelated. No new officer/event facts. SKIP-with-reason (saturated).
  • Re-check (slice deepen-x-slice-09231000-1, 2026-09-25): fresh grep (UMD TASA / College Park / 馬里蘭) — new hits are [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys-138|Our Journeys #138]]‘s College Park Taiwan grad-student circle (陳炳耀、蘇金春、黃淑貞 — a 1960s–70s pre-TASA geography mention, no campus-club link stated) and a 2025 馬里蘭 Rotary Club mutual-aid report (unrelated body). No new TASA-attributed facts; SKIP-with-reason (saturated).
