The Taiwanese Association of America East Tennessee (東田納西 台灣同鄉會) is a regional chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America (全美台灣同鄉會), the national umbrella organization of Taiwanese American community associations. History & Role in the Community
- Founding (1975): Organized at the University of Tennessee Knoxville amid the 1970s wave of Taiwanese student organizing against KMT campus surveillance. Five UT students led the organizing: 高民環、汪雅煌、陳耀宗、林正惠、李明輝. 陳耀宗 persuaded recently-immigrated 陳玉明 (co-owner of the L & N Restaurant) to serve as organizing-committee head and founding president; the founding convention drew 50–60 people. Primary account: 張惠雄 (30th-anniversary history, originally in the chapter newsletter 大煙山麓 vol.2 no.5, 1995-11-05).
- First charter name: founded on Thanksgiving Day 1975 at the UT Baptist Student Center as 「諾城台灣同鄉會」 (Knoxville); renamed 東田納西台灣同鄉會 at the request of members in nearby towns.
- Founding officers: 陳玉明, first president — his 20th-anniversary essay (orig. 大煙山麓 vol.1 no.7, 1994-11-05; Japanese original trans. 周佑蓮) is held at 陳玉明. 呂錦文, newly arrived in Knoxville, spoke at the founding convention and was elected vice president — see 呂錦文.
- Newsletter: the chapter published the community newsletter 大煙山麓 (Big Smokies) from at least 1994 — 大煙山麓 record.
- Southeast camp host: the chapter hosted the first 美東南區台灣人夏令會 on 1979-06-08 at Harrison Bay State Park, Chattanooga (120 attendees from Atlanta/Athens/Knoxville; organizer 李豐隆; the chapter won the softball tournament), again in 1982 at Tusculum College, Johnson City (convener 林永樂; site of the 黨外四人行’s first overseas collective appearance at an overseas camp), and in 1986 (convener 呂錦文) — 劉格正. At the 1982 Tusculum camp the 黨外四人行 (尤清、康寧祥、張德銘、黃煌雄) appeared as the tour’s first overseas stop, drawing 400+ attendees; the大会 renamed campus buildings for the occasion — Fine Art Building 「美麗島大樓」、Union Hall 「明德大樓」、Katherine Hall 「秀蓮大樓」, and the Gymnasium 「文成館」 in memory of 陳文成 — with one dormitory dubbed 「台灣村」 (same record).
