The Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) at UC Santa Cruz — known in Chinese as 臺灣同學會 — is a non-profit cultural student club at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The organization is dedicated to providing a welcoming environment for overseas Taiwanese students as well as any student interested in Taiwanese culture, and is officially registered in the UCSC Get Involved club directory under the Cultural Identity category.

Role in the Community

  • “Taiwanese Student Association” is a generative name shared across campuses; the corpus preserves several distinct chapters, each its own record. HOLD: this TAH directory page is described as the UCSC 臺灣同學會, while the corpus work 1961 claims the Kansas chapter (1961) as the first TSA — never merged here.
  • Related chapter records in the corpus (each a separate campus org, linked for disambiguation, not identity):
  • Early-chapter organizing detail preserved in memoirs: at the University of Wisconsin, 周烒明’s account records the chapter registering in early 1963 as “UW Formosan Student Club 威大台灣同學會”, blocked by the ROC embassy’s professional students until the students won a public Student Senate debate (利騰俊 arguing the Formosa/台灣 name’s origin), then formally chartered 1963-10-19 as “The Formosan Club of the University of Wisconsin 威大台灣同鄉會” with $1/semester dues and 周烒明’s father 周试明醫師 as faculty advisor — 81. 早期威大台灣學生在台灣建國運動所扮演的角色
  • Cultural-organizing branch of a chapter: the UW-Milwaukee 台灣同學會 (founded c. 1996) staged 陳清風 professor-scripted puppet shows (虎姑婆) at the 1997 Moon Festival using pre-recorded 台詞 (“卡拉OK布袋戲”), spinning off a standing 台灣布袋戲團 in 1999 that toured local schools — 277. 威斯康辛大學「台灣布袋戲團」的故事 (2017-02)
  • Further chapter records preserved in the corpus (each a distinct campus org):
    • Kansas State 台灣同學會: 陳希寬 succeeded 張肅 as chapter president in 1965-09; between 1964–65 莊秋雄、蔡一、王能祥、黃石定、呂天明、方菊雄、陳希寬 formed the “Kansas Suite Group” debating Taiwan issues, and during the 1966–68 統獨 campus debate the group placed 二二八 ad campaigns in the Kansas State Collegian three years running — Our Journeys 33
    • ROC-consulate pressure on a founding-era chapter: a consulate letter to a University of Texas organizer opposes the planned 「台灣同學會」 as dividing 中國同學 and demands passport registration — the same embassy-blocking pattern the UW chapter overcame — Our Journeys 45
    • 北卡台灣同學會 under KMT campus-agent pressure: the 海報事件, where agents tore down 中國同學會 posters to frame 郭倍宏’s 台灣同學會, escalated into litigation the students won; the chapter later published Taiwanese Collegian 台灣學生報 (2016) — Our Journeys 237
    • 密西根大學台灣同學會 co-sponsored the 陳文成殉身十二週年 commemorative volume with the 安雅堡台灣同鄕會 — Our Journeys 321
    • A 1985 夏令會 co-hosted with the national 全美台灣同學會 — the most culture-flavored edition (陳芳明、林衡哲、謝里法、黃美惠; 《台灣文化》 launched that year) — Our Journeys 379
    • Chapter-level continuity into the present: NJIT and Stevens Institute 台灣同學會 students (with NYU volunteers) staffed a North-Jersey career symposium for 40+ Taiwanese students — Our Journeys 219
  • Context from the movement-history essay Our Journeys 357: campus 臺灣同學會 grew out of late-1960s Berkeley/Stanford student gatherings; because chapters bearing “臺灣” in their names carried explicit Taiwanese consciousness, the KMT government pressured them and organized rival groups to split the overseas community — student associations were among the most common organs of community life alongside 同鄉會 and 臺灣教會.
