University of Minnesota Taiwanese Student Association
Identity Snapshot
- English: University of Minnesota Taiwanese Student Association
- Chinese: —
- Era: Contemporary
- Geography: Taiwanese American community
- Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)
The University of Minnesota Taiwanese Student Association (UMNTSA), also referred to as the Taiwan Student Association UMN (明尼蘇達 台灣同學會), appears in two separate legacy Google Sites and a Facebook group, suggesting it may have operated in parallel with or separately from the Taiwanese Student Society (TSS). According to its own website, the organization’s primary goal was to serve and help Taiwanese students at the University of Minnesota and in the broader Twin Cities area, including hosting summer information sessions for incoming students, arranging airport pickups on request, and organizing social activities throughout the school year. The organization also welcomed students from other ethnic backgrounds to participate and learn about Taiwanese culture.
Role in the Community
- Minnesota Taiwanese-organization ecosystem in the TAH corpus (sibling campus/community chapters the TSS overlapped with): FAPA Minnesota Chapter 「台灣人公共事務會明尼蘇達州中部分會」 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/31-minnesota-chapter-fapa|TAH #31]]) and the Taiwanese Association of America–Minnesota Chapter 「明州台灣同鄉會」 (TAA Minnesota).
- Campus activism at the University of Minnesota is also documented in memoir [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys85-eng|Our Journeys #85 (Tsu-Yi)]]: while an undergrad (from 1956–57) he drafted the 3F petition to the UN for Thomas Liao overnight, showing student-era independence organizing predating the TSS lineage. HOLD: no corpus source states when the TSS itself was founded or its relationship to TSS/UMNTSA naming.
- Earliest documented Taiwanese student gathering on the Minneapolis campus: 謝伯芳’s memoir 369. 懷憶六十年代前期的明市 records the 「Mpls 台灣人祈禱查經會」, started autumn 1960 by five students (殷宗舜、李春美、陳秉虔、蘇惠美、謝伯芳) with Friday-night worship and fellowship, growing from ~10 to 20+ attendees — the prayer/Bible-study circle predates and overlaps the student-association layer of the campus community.
- Minnesota Taiwanese-organization lineage per 曾紀明 (Chi-Ming Tseng), 123. 明州台美人百年大事: 明尼蘇達同鄉會 representative 賴金德 attended the 1965 Madison convention and the 1966 Philadelphia talks that founded UFAI, placing Minnesota student/hometown organizing inside the national independence-network formation.
- Community continuity: the successor TAA Minnesota Chapter’s Taiwanese booth at Festival of Nations/MN won two Awards of Excellence in 2017 (theme 「Traditional Wedding」 — its 24th consecutive year, 29 wins in 31 years; [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/2017-8|TAH #8, 2017]]) and three in 2018 — its 25th consecutive year ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/2018-4|TAH #4, 2018]]).
- Minnesota alumni layer above the campus chapter: UMN awarded 陳都博士 Dr. Tu Chen its 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award (明尼蘇達大學傑出校友), recorded at [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/outstanding-achievement-award-umn-tu-chen|TAH #5, 2015]] — the Minnesota Taiwanese alumni network documented in the corpus extends beyond the student layer.
- Minnesota community ties in the arts: 蕭泰然’s open letter to his fellow Minnesotans with 蔡友仁’s reply, 2016-08-22 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/mystories456|TAH #456]]) — evidence of a settled Minnesota Taiwanese community the campus generation fed into.
- Corpus re-grep 2026-09-18 (slice 09170600-14): no record names the TSS/UMNTSA itself; the page’s Minnesota cluster above is the full absorbable corpus material. HOLD on founding date and UMNTSA-vs-TSS naming remains.
