Role in the Community

Our own memoir corpus (Our Journeys) records Charles Ting (丁昭昇) as a Southern California movement organizer and institution-builder:

  • Founding of the national-diplomacy organization (Formosa I.D.A.) — one of the 15 attendees at the Feb 13 founding meeting (with Kenjohn Wang, Ming-che Lin, Philip Chen, Tan-Sun Chen, Tu Chen, Yu-hsin Kuo, Ming Min Peng, Jen-Tai Tsai, Chia-yu Yang, C.C. Yang, Fu-Chen Lo) that drafted the three objectives: promote Taiwan’s democracy with island democratic forces, publicize self-determination internationally, and protect overseas Taiwanese rights ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys65|Our Journeys #65]], EN).
  • Flamingo Garden Senior Apartments / TASA-SC — among the community leaders (with An-Su Gao Lai, Kenjohn Wang, Ming-chung Zhuo, Hong-yen Hsu, Cheng-tsung Chang, Chia-yu Yang, Symeon Woo) who built the El Monte senior apartments and Taiwanese Senior Center (1984–1988); he and Cheng-tsung Chang helped buy up the remaining shares when fundraising stalled ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys173|Our Journeys #173]], [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys54|Our Journeys #54]]).
  • Taiwanese American Citizens League preparatory committee — listed among the consultants in 台灣公論報 第三六九期 (1985-04-15, p.9; the consultant roster also names 江昭儀, 許丕龍, 賴明詔, 蕭泰然 and ~70 others) ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys186|Our Journeys #186]]).
  • Flamingo Garden share purchase detail — the English memoir specifies each $50,000 share needed only $25,000 cash (rest bank-loaned), 58 shares total, and that Charles Ting, Cheng-tsung Chang and the memoirist were the ones who ultimately purchased the remaining shares when investor recruitment stalled ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys54-eng|Our Journeys #54 (EN)]]).
  • Taiwanese-language church founding (Los Angeles) — the LA church memoir records Ting (丁昭昇) as one of the church workers (with 陳銓仁, 林妙珠, 陳慶霖, 盧淑貞, 許和瑞) who in 1970 proposed adding a Taigi-language service at 羅省基督教會; at Rev. 羅文’s counsel they spun off separately and founded 台語福音教會 in October 1970 — an early institution in the Southern California Taiwanese church movement ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys257|Our Journeys #257]]). This places him in LA’s Taiwanese Christian community a decade before his 1980s TASA-SC / Formosa I.D.A. institution-building.

Note: the #65 founding roster’s EN/ZH editions transliterate 許千惠 as “Chien-hui Hsu” and render an additional name (ZH 陳伸夫 vs EN “Philip Chen”) inconsistently; roster per edition as quoted, never auto-merged.
