Community roles
- Taught music at Kaohsiung Girls’ Senior High School (高雄女中), 1945–1948; later taught Bible & music and served as dormitory superintendent (舍監) at her alma mater Chang Jung Girls’ High School (長榮女中).
- 3rd President of the Taiwanese America Seniors Association of Southern California (TASA), 1983–1988. During her term she restored the association’s name to 「台灣長輩會」 (Taiwan Seniors Association) and advocated construction of senior apartments; membership stood at over 600 at the time ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys54-eng||Our Journeys #54 英文版]] / |中文版: 「第三任會長賴高安賜,恢復「台灣長輩會」名稱,並提倡籌建老人公寓」).
- Founding member of the |Chang Jung Girls’ High School Alumni Association of Southern California (台南長榮女中南加州校友會).
- Background to the building campaign: from TASA’s founding in 1979 until January 1983 the association only rented office space and had been forced to move three times — “流離失所,無固定會址.” This instability was the impetus for her 1984 proposal to the board that the association build its own senior center and senior apartments, which the board approved unanimously; membership stood at about 600. Second president 蕭華銓 (Hua-chuan Hsiao) willingly stayed on as vice-president to help carry the project ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys173-eng||Our Journeys #173]]).
- Assembled the Flamingo Garden project’s advisory group of about twenty, inviting community leaders such as Kenjohn Wang, Charles Ting 丁昭昇, Symeon Woo 吳西面, Hong-yen Hsu 許鴻源, Ming-chung Zhuo 卓敏忠 and others as consultants, plus three lawyers — Mao-ching (David) Huang 黃茂清, Chung-yuan Liao 廖重遠 and R. S. Wu 吳瑞信 — as legal advisers, with Ti-sheng Yang 楊惕生 as secretary ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys173||Our Journeys #173 中文版]]).
- 1985 — a large fundraising dinner for the association was held by 卓敏忠 (Ming-chung Zhuo, manager of 萬通銀行 General Bank of Commerce) together with the memoir’s narrator-officer; the Monterey Park parcel was optioned immediately afterwards ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys50||Our Journeys #50]]).
- 1985 offer on a 40,000-square-foot parcel in Monterey Park was opposed by local residents and the city government; after protests and demonstrations the association won, but difficulties put the project on temporary hold, and in 1986 the city’s budget deficit ended its senior-apartment subsidy. Her co-workers’ slogan for the push: “Our elderly should be taken care of by our own community; we should not rely on the U.S. government to do so” ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys54-eng||Our Journeys #54 英文版]]).
- Financing of Flamingo Garden: 58 shares in total (one held by the association); a $50,000 share required $25,000 cash with the rest bank-financed. When General Bank of Commerce balked at lending — amid its own real-estate loan losses — the response was that a Taiwanese bank that would not lend to Taiwanese public-welfare causes served no purpose, and the loan then passed. After a year of promotion only about 20 people had registered for accommodations, but Charles Ting 丁昭昇, Cheng-tsung Chang 張正宗 and fellow promoters ultimately bought up the remaining shares ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys54-eng||Our Journeys #54 英文版]]).
- On resigning in July 1988, handed the fourth president An-hsin Hsu: $18,632.04 in association funds, two Flamingo Garden shares bought with $50,000 of raised funds, and the permanent free-and-exclusive rights to the social hall and recreation room.
- Author of 《回首廿八年路》, published in the 1997 《南加州台灣長輩會會員名冊》.
- Appeared in the television advertisement produced to raise support for the Taiwan Community Hall (台灣會館), alongside former TASA president 蔡盧錫金.
