Role in the Community

From his own oral memoir, 張啟典醫師的回憶 — 1977年TAC/EC (楊遠薰, [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys338|Our Journeys #338]]):

  • Grew up in Wanhua/Monga, Taipei in a grass-root family; barred from teaching jobs in Taiwan for having no connections and refusing to join the KMT — this shaped his quiet support of the Taiwanese people’s movement in the US.
  • 1969 (3rd year of study in Boston): founded the 波士頓台灣基督教會, having grown up in the elder-elder church (長老教會) in Monga.
  • 1970: traveled to Downington, PA for the 1st U.S. East Coast Christian Taigi Summer Assembly (美東基督徒台語夏令會) initiated by 歐炯雄, becoming a charter member of what became the 美東台灣人夏令會 (U.S. East Coast Taiwanese Summer Assembly).
  • 1977: president of the Boston Taiwanese Association (波士頓台灣同鄉會) and convener of the 8th 美東台灣人夏令會 at Brown University — the first held on a U.S. university campus, ~400 attendees. Speakers included pastors 林興隆 and 郭榮敏, plus 陳錦芳, 洪哲勝 and 李豐明; 張金策 reported on Taiwan’s human-rights situation. Chang personally screened out a suspected KMT agent who tried to register twice.
  • 2009: attended the 40th 美東台灣人夏令會 (Caribbean cruise), reflecting on the end of racial segregation and the black-list era.

  • HOLD: conflict on Northeastern degree — TAH press-kit table says “1967 M.S. 有機化學” vs. memoir says “1973 博士”; likewise existing “1984 Ph.D. Boston University” vs. memoir’s medical degree (醫師執照). Not merged.
  • HOLD: existing Employment lists “Harvard University — professor”; memoir says pathology research/teaching in Boston with no Harvard mention.
