Role in the Community

(absorbed 2026-09-14 revisit pass from the vault corpus)

  • Co-author of the movement record itself: the NATWA history in the Our Journeys corpus ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys60-eng|Our Journeys #60 (EN)]]) is authored by Grace Wu Chou & Elena M. Ling — the NATWA 1988 founding account on this page rests on her own writing.
  • Cleveland memoir ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys74-eng|Our Journeys #74 (EN)]]): the Cleveland chapter of the International Human Rights Association (IHR) was founded 1981-10-11 at the Chou home; as West Virginia regional head she had already led IHR work, and in Cleveland her effort got IHR to adopt 陳菊 (Chen Chu) as Ohio’s prisoner of conscience — she later came to Cleveland to thank them after release. A FAPA chapter was also founded at the Chou home, building ties with Reps. Louis Stokes, Edward Feighan and Sherrod Brown.
  • 1983 — elected president of the Taiwanese (American) Association Cleveland; that year’s Midwest Taiwanese American Summer Conference at Oberlin College drew speakers 周鏡由, 許榮淑, Edward Chen and Parris Hsu-Cheng Chang — unprecedented attendance (corpus detail narrowing the undated “Midwest coordinator” line above).
  • Madison origin story (same memoir): came to Univ. of Wisconsin research in 1958 on professor 董大成 (Ta-cheng Tung)‘s recommendation after two years as NTU Biochemistry TA; married 周烒明 (Suy-Ming Sam Chou) end of 1959; their house was the gathering place for Taiwanese-identifying international students, feeding into the UW Formosan Club’s official registration 1963-10-19.
  • Husband’s own memoir confirms the household’s role: 周烒明’s first-person account [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys81-eng|Our Journeys #81 (EN)]] (2014-12-29) retells the same 1958 arrival / end-of-1959 marriage and describes the Chou house as the weekend gathering point where Taiwanese students sang 歌謠, spoke 台語 and exchanged views — the domestic side of the milieu that produced the UW Formosan Club. Cross-linked with the #74 account; no date conflicts, nothing to HOLD.
  • Her TAH profiles are corpus works: [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/senior-taiwanese-american-23|TAH #23]], [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/133-dr-grace-wu-chou|TAH #133]], [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/whos-who-2154-grace-wu|TAH #2154]].
  • Saturation note: corpus materially extends the press-kit bio (IHR/陳菊/FAPA at the Chou home, Oberlin 1983 conference, 1958–59 Madison chronology); no conflicts with existing dates, nothing to HOLD.
