Role in the Community

Echo Lin (林錫湖) was one of the five founding members of Formosans’ Free Formosa (3F), organized in Philadelphia in 1956 — the first post-war Taiwanese independence organization in the US, reorganized in 1958 as the United Formosans for Independence UFI (台獨聯盟). Corpus records:

  • 1956-01-01 — the founding-members record naming him.
  • Tsu-Yi Jay Loo — co-founder Loo’s memoir: Echo was born into a prominent Tainan family (father Chuan-fu Lin, a well-known entrepreneur; the Chinese text names him 林全福 — see HOLD below), held an M.S. from the University of New Mexico, and began doctoral studies in Organic Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in 1955, not long before his girlfriend Dolores moved from New Mexico to Philadelphia. Co-founders: Tom Yang 楊東傑, John Lin 林榮勳, Edward Chen, and Tsu-Yi Jay Loo 盧主義. Per the same memoir, of the five founders all except John Lin were 台南一中 graduates and all except Echo were Christians.
  • 2014-09 — historian Chang Yan-shian’s account dating the 3F founding to 1956 in Philadelphia, 1958 reorganization into UFI.
  • United Formosans for Independence UFI (台獨聯盟)
  • 1894. Echo Lin (Who’s Who) and 2016-05 — his own encyclopedia entries.
  • 2024-01 — 2024 memoir: the author and Echo arrived at the University of Pennsylvania the same fall, with Echo pursuing a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry; Echo was two years the author’s senior at 台南一中 (Tainan First High), corroborating the 台南一中 connection in the Loo memoir. The five founders gathered virtually every weekend — meals in Chinatown, often ending in Echo’s apartment — where venting about KMT corruption and repression hardened into the founding discussions that led to 3F.

HOLD: conflict in Education — TAH table lists 新墨西哥州立大學 M.S. 1955 and 賓州州立大學 Ph.D. 1958, but the Loo memoir (ourjourneys85) says he had already received his New Mexico master’s when he started Penn doctoral work in 1955, and the tah-tables row “St. Joseph University” conflicts with “賓州州立大學” as the doctorate-granting institution. Also HOLD: father’s hanzi — the Loo memoir’s Chinese text gives 林全福 while an earlier ingest of the same memoir recorded 林傳福 (romanization Chuan-fu Lin matches both). Also HOLD: birth-era “1930” in the snapshot is unverified. Dates left as-is pending a second source.

Note: his own TAH encyclopedia entry 1894 is titled “Echo Lin 林仁惠” — a second Chinese name variant (林錫湖 vs 林仁惠) to reconcile later.
