Role in the Community

  • Author of Map of an Onion, national winner of the 2015 Hillary Gravendyk Poetry Prize; US Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera is among his backers. Recorded in the community oral-history interview Intersection of Poetry and Movements: An Interview with Author Kenji Liu (TaiwaneseAmerican.org, 2016-05-12, byline Ho Chie).
  • From that interview: born in Japan; father Hakka from Miaoli County (born in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period, excluded from Japanese citizenship as an “alien”), mother’s side from the Kyoto area. Studied anthropology (postcolonial studies) in graduate school; Asian American community activism and multicultural alliance-building shaped his writing. Day job: graphic designer — deliberately keeping creative writing off the market. His poem “So that you are always sir, dear sir” was written in solidarity with the Mexico 43 protests and distributed in Spanish translation on risographed broadsides at demonstrations.
  • Cited by fellow poet Leona Chen as one of the poets who “carved out a literary space I hadn’t realized existed,” in her interview.
  • His own TAH encyclopedia record: 2016-05. Corpus sweeps 2026-09-21 and 2026-09-22 (slice 09210800-20): no further memoir mentions beyond his own records and the interview above (bare-劉 grep hits are unrelated Liu/Yau/Lin families). Re-verified 2026-09-22 (slice 09220600-13): grep for Kenji returns only whoswho904, his own interview, the Leona Chen citation, and index listings — already absorbed. Re-verified 2026-09-23 (slice 09221400-18): identical hit set. Re-verified 2026-09-25 (slice 09230900-28): fresh grep Kenji returns the same set — whoswho904, his interview, the Leona Chen citation, index listings; SKIP-with-reason: saturated.
