Role in the Community
- As a Harvard graduate student he took part in the independence-movement enlightenment work, distributing 《台灣青年》 and 《台灣通訊》 on campus alongside peers at other campuses (234. 台獨聯盟美國本部).
- 1965-10-29/30 — attended the secret unification congress at the University of Wisconsin (麥迪遜結盟大會) as the 波士頓同鄉會 representative; delegates signed bilingual oaths against KMT infiltration (81. 早期威大台灣學生在台灣建國運動所扮演的角色). The corpus preserves an English edition of this record, 81 (EN). The Role of Early Wisconsin Taiwanese Students…, which names him as “Sin-I Hsiao of the Boston Taiwanese Association” among the oath-signing delegates — useful for English-language citation of the same event.
- 1966-06-18 — again the Boston delegate at the Philadelphia talks where 「台灣獨立聯盟UFI」 and 「台灣問題硏究會FASG」 agreed to merge; this resolved into the 1966-07-04 founding of 全美台灣獨立聯盟 (UFAI) (same record, 周烒明起稿 memoir).
- 1985 — in the「四腳仔官司」trial in Virginia, he was arranged by the defense as the opening witness (then teaching history at University of Victoria, Canada) to lecture the American jury on four centuries of outside rule over Taiwan, establishing that「四腳仔」was a term for the外来 ruling regime and its adherents, not a bestial insult; 蔡武雄 followed with the Vichy «collaborator» analogy ( 2014-11).
- Listed under Massachusetts in the first 《全美台灣同鄉通訊錄》 alongside 林文忠 and 鄭忠雄 ( 陳希寬).
- 1990 — of the 84 applicants for the first NAIT (台灣人教授協會) homecoming annual meeting in Taipei, 18 were named by the authorities as having visa「技術性問題」(blacklisted), a list that included Hsiao; after nearly six months of negotiation with 海工會/僑委會/外交部 the blacklist shrank to three (吳明基、李應元、郭榮桔), with the reason narrowed from「莫須有」to「現任暴力型革命組織的中央委員」. Hsiao was among the first members — named alongside 周烒明 — able to return to Taiwan that year ( 朱耀源).
- 1992-07 — delivered the keynote「台灣的轉機」at the 14th 美東南區台灣人夏令會 (Methodist College, Spartanburg, SC), per the summer-camp history (2016).
- 1990-08 — during the first NATPA (台灣人教授協會) homecoming annual meeting’s five-day southbound tour (07/30–08/03), he gave an evening talk in Tainan at the banquet hosted by 鄭楓木醫師, per the meeting memoir ( 2014-10).
