The Taiwanese Association of America – Houston Chapter (TAA-HC, 休士頓台灣同鄉會) is a regional chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America (全美台灣同鄉會), the national umbrella organization for Taiwanese American community associations in the United States. The chapter serves the Taiwanese American community in the greater Houston, Texas area.

Role in the Community

  • According to 莊承業’s community memoir 漫談美南台灣人夏令會的濫觴 (10/2017) — [[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys318|TAHS corpus #318]] — Texans in Houston formally established the Houston Formosan Club in the summer of 1970 to connect fellow villagers. In May 1975 it held the large-scale South Region Mass Conference, and on the eve of the US break with the ROC in late 1978 it held the South Taiwan Independence Mass Conference; after that the club regularly held small-scale political activities.
  • The memoir credits Houston as one of the two cities (with Dallas) that carried the rotating South Taiwanese American Summer Institute after 1986; the first edition (1984, under president 謝英敏) was held at Sam Houston State University with 300–400 attendees.
  • The chapter has its own entry in the TAH encyclopedia: Taiwanese Association of America, Houston Chapter 休士頓台灣同鄉會 (recorded 2015-12-05); the senior-membership offshoot 休士頓台灣長春會 / Houston Formosan Evergreen Association is separately recorded at 2. 休士頓台灣長春會 (2014-10-12).
  • The chapter publishes its own community paper, recorded in the corpus as Houston Taiwanese American Journal 休士頓台灣鄉訊.
  • A second founding memoir, 陳淮崇’s recollection of the Washington/Baltimore TAA births (138. 華府與巴城TAA的誕生) states he co-founded 休士頓台灣同鄉會 with local Taiwanese friends while on a company plant-startup assignment in Houston (1968 autumn – 1970 September), naming 黃際鑫、黃錫勳、洪朝煌、曾伯元、石岫、陳炳耀、陳庵 among the early circle.
  • The chapter’s later community infrastructure is documented in 莊程業 (Eddie Chuang)‘s memoir of the Houston Taiwanese Community Center’s founding ( Houston TCC Tenth Anniversary).
  • HOLD: founding framing — 1970 Houston Formosan Club (莊承業 memoir) vs 1968–1970 co-founding window (陳淮崇 memoir #138) vs present-day TAA chapter identity; two memoirs give overlapping but non-identical origin stories, no date merge attempted.
  • Re-grep (deepen-x 2026-09-21 / 2026-09-22 / 0923 slice-2): three more direct corpus records surfaced. The chapter’s own institutional history is on file as Houston Chapter 休士頓台灣同鄉會簡介; cultural programming is recorded at 45. 休士頓夏季音樂會 by 休士頓台灣同鄉會, Houston, TX, 1984; and the TAH facts record TAA states the chapter reached the highest membership of any TAA chapter, over 800 members. A sibling organization, TACL 台美公民協會休士頓分會, is separately recorded at TACL (distinct entity, not merged). 2026-09-23 re-grep: hit set unchanged — saturated.
  • Founding memoir — 廖明徵’s first-person account (2017; EN: ourjourneys308-eng): in late 1969 林振榮 arrived in Houston on assignment from 張燦鍙 to organize the local Taiwanese; he met 廖明徵 at 林榮長’s home (Christmas 1969), and after the new year the three of them convened 莊勝義 (莊勝義)、黃和義、郭鐘樑、郭嘉明、余文貴、何通雲、陳懷崇 to found the club. It was first named Formosan Club (the name itself a political statement against the KMT), its non-political charter drafted by 廖明徵, and 闕文榮 (211. 闕文榮醫師 — first president, 1970) was invited as its first president; the club formally began operating around the lunar new year. In 1975, under president 莊承業 (莊承業) it was renamed 台灣同鄉會 (the term “台灣” being more widely accepted) — the same year 莊承業 founded the 德州台灣人信用合作社, with the 休士頓台灣語文學校 and 台灣人傳統基金會 following, the base that later produced the Taiwanese Community Center. 廖明徵 credits 林振榮 as the indispensable founder.
  • Newsletter lineage (307. 廖明徵 on TAA publications): the chapter’s 《鄉訊》 has been published continuously since the founding (July 1970) — magazine-format monthly until March 1987; then, after 郭正光 (Dr. Mike Kuo 郭正光博士) became president in 1987, it merged with the Southwestern chapters (Dallas, Austin, College Station, San Antonio, Denver, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Baton Rouge) into the broadsheet 聯合鄉訊 (Apr 1987 – Sep 1992, 65 issues, edited and published by Houston), followed by the Houston-only 台灣鄉訊 broadsheet (Oct 1992 – Aug 1998, 71 issues). The chapter also runs an e-newsletter (Houston Chapter e-newsletter) and published the 2018台灣人名錄 – 大休士頓地區及明湖城.
  • South Region 台灣人民眾大會, Houston, 1975-05-17 (317. 廖明徵 memoir): the first such conference in the American South, held at the Houston Red Carpet Inn–West with attendees from Georgia, Louisiana and across Texas — chapter president 林振榮 spoke alongside 彭明敏、張燦鍙、魏瑞明、陳錦芳; the 大會宣言 was placed as a paid ad in the Houston Chronicle on 5/27, and ABC/Houston Post covered the event. This corroborates the May 1975 “South Region Mass Conference” credited to Houston in 莊承業’s memoir (#318).
  • Public presence: the chapter entered the first flower float (花車) in a public Houston parade in 2002 ( 2002) and hosted the Taiwan Night Market Festival in Houston on 2016-04-16 ( 2016).
  • HOLD: 陳懷崇 (in 廖明徵’s #308 founding roll-call) vs 陳淮崇 (in 陳淮崇’s own memoir #138) — likely the same person, two spellings, not merged. Also minor date tension: #308 says the club began operating “around lunar new year” while #307 dates the 鄉訊 from “July 1970, since founding”; no merge attempted.
  • Re-check (deepen-x slice-09231000-2, 2026-09-25): fresh re-grep surfaced two records already absorbable into the chapter’s institutional record. Houston TCC states the chapter made a $30,000 interest-free loan toward the Houston Taiwanese Community Center building (total cost $310,000 raised: $40,000 TCC Fund + $30,000 TAA-HC loan + donations from 260 households, twelve of $10,000 each); the same memoir dates the chapter’s founding to 1970 in its roll-call of Houston organizations (TAA-HC 1970, TFCU 1975, 台語學校 1985, 大達科商務中心 1987), and the TCC inauguration ceremony is photographed 7/11/1992. TAA records the chapter’s monthly newsletter Houston Taiwanese American Journal reaching the highest circulation of any TAA chapter, over 4,000 copies (2016). Remaining new hits (ourjourneys76-eng, mystories460-eng) contain no further chapter-specific facts; the 1970-vs-1968–70 founding HOLD above stands, no date merge.
