  • Core roles: Community organization (TAH directory)

The Taiwanese Heritage Society of Houston (THSH) is an IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in southwest Houston, Texas, dedicated to providing community services and promoting Taiwanese culture and heritage in the greater Houston area. It owns and operates the Taiwanese Community Center (TCC), a 15,000-square-foot facility on a two-acre lot at 5885 Point West Drive that has served as the home of Houston’s Taiwanese American community since opening in 1992.

Role in the Community

  • 1988-09 — The five principals of the Taiwanese Language School — Chu-chen Kuo, Yu-fang Shen, Ching-shi Hsieh, Chiu-cheng Lin, Ming Cheng Liau — with consultant Kuei-fen Hsieh, applied to register THSH as a tax-exempt non-profit, the organizational vehicle for purchasing the community center.
  • Corroborated in detail by principal Chu-chen Kuo’s memoir of the language school’s first decade: an earlier “休士頓台灣人文化基金會” (Houston Taiwanese Cultural Foundation) planned alongside the school was stillborn before registration; in 1988 the school board recommended the five-person 籌備小組 (沈郁芳, 謝淸實, 林秋成, 廖明徴, 郭珠貞) to solve the schoolhouse problem, and with principal 林秋成 pushing and accountant 謝貴分 (Kuei-fen Hsieh) assisting it took two years to obtain tax-exempt status, after which 休士頓台灣人傳統基金會 was formally established and the 台灣人活動中心 was purchased by fundraising in 1991 (2016).
  • 1991-01 — IRS approved the tax-exempt application. At the first general meeting (June 1st) the property purchase was approved and a seven-member negotiating committee was elected, with Chao-Yuh Yang as President and Sheng-Yi Chuang as Vice-president, switching after a few months. The parent Taiwanese Association of America granted a $30,000 no-interest loan repayable over ten years for the purchase.
  • THSH’s founding is inseparable from the Taiwanese Community Center (TCC): without THSH “it’s hard to say how long it would have taken to open a community center” ( Cheng Y. Eddie Chuang).
  • The TCC complex has co-housed the Taiwanese American Federal Credit Union, the Houston Chapter of the Taiwanese Association of America, and the Taiwanese Language School; THSH’s community-service role is documented in 2017.
  • Scholarship grantor — THSH is recorded as a host of the Taiwanese American Community Scholarship award ceremony for high-school students, the nationwide program (2003–2017, ~1,000 recipients across 14 regions) documented in 07.
  • Library fund steward — THSH manages the Taiwanese American Fund in the Professor Ya Yen Lee Memorial Library, per 8. Taiwanese American Fund in Professor Ya Yen Lee Memorial Library, 2016-02-25.
  • Food-bank giving — THSH’s 2007 donation to the Houston food bank is recorded as 31. 休士頓台灣人傳統基金會捐款Food Bank 2007 (archived 2018-04-11) — charitable community service alongside the center’s programs.
  • The award ceremony THSH hosted for the nationwide scholarship program is catalogued as THSH Houston, TX, 2015-07-21.
  • First T.A. non-profit — THSH is recorded as the first Taiwanese American organization to obtain tax-exempt non-profit status, dated 02/1991 in 1991; the memoir account above dates the IRS approval to 1991-01. HOLD: conflict — ff298 titles the milestone 02/1991 vs. Chuang’s memoir 1991-01 (approval vs. formal establishment may explain the gap).
  • Records stewardship — THSH’s governance is comparatively stable: its board (理事會) turns over slowly and meetings are minuted and archived, unlike the annually-rotating 同鄉會 chapters; this archive of founding-era meeting minutes is why the foundation’s records survived and could be compiled (07).
  • Cultural programming — THSH and the TCC host concerts as community events: the 休士頓台灣人傳統周音樂會 at the TCC on 2004-05-22 (2004) and the 福爾摩沙響宴—乘著琴音的翅膀 presented by THSH in Houston on 2011-05-10 (2011).
  • Scholarship grantor — THSH is recorded as a host of the Taiwanese American Community Scholarship award ceremony for high-school students, the nationwide program (2003–2017, ~1,000 recipients across 14 regions) documented in 07; the Houston award record is catalogued separately as Houston.
  • Center documentation — the TCC’s own brief introduction is preserved as 09 (English version 31. Brief Intro to the Houston Taiwanese Community Center), and the THSH / 休士頓台灣會館 complex is photographed in 01. The center itself is also catalogued as a historical work, 2014-10-12, alongside the organization’s own directory entry 2014-10-12.
  • Fundraising culture — the center’s 出錢出力 ethos is dramatized in 蔡淑媛(翠屏)‘s memoir 2016: for the 921 earthquake relief drive, an elderly visitor left a large cash sum on the counter without leaving his name (“救災出錢是本份,『嘸免』謝卡”), a young white visitor asked to donate blood in lieu of money, and two women volunteers collected door to door — one diner gave his $5 lunch money (“不吃一頓午飯餓不死,救災卡要緊”).
  • Founding mission — per shuyuan0220, the 1988 founding by volunteers who “出錢出力” set the charter: 從事社會服務和推廣台灣的文化與傳統. THSH accepts and applies for no resources from the Taiwanese government overseas — “台灣人民辛苦繳納的血汗錢,一分一釐都應留在台灣境內為人民謀福利” has been the consensus of every member from the founding to the present. The foundation raised funds to purchase a foreclosed day-care center building, renovated it, and opened it in 1992 as the 台灣人活動中心, giving the language school its first permanent home.
  • Three pillars — 莊承業 (Cheng Y. Eddie Chuang)‘s account places THSH’s birth alongside the Texas Formosan Federal Credit Union and the Houston Taiwanese Language School as the foundations of Houston’s Taiwanese community: 2017 (English 308-eng). His Chinese memoir 233. 回顧休士頓台灣人活動中心的成立 details the 1991-01 IRS approval and the 1991-02 announcement of formal tax-exempt establishment — consistent with ff298’s 02/1991 dating vs. Chuang’s approval-month 1991-01 (see HOLD above).
  • Newsletter — THSH publishes the Taiwanese Center/Houston e-newsletter (休士頓台灣人傳統基金會電子報), archived as 2018-10-30.
  • 2019 activities & outreach — THSH’s community activities are catalogued as 2019-01-06, and its AsiaFest participation shows outreach beyond the Taiwanese community: 2019-07.
  • 2020 fund record — 2020-09 records Dr. Pao-Ting Cheng with the THSH/TA Fund and 葉郁如.
  • Leadership oral history — THSH chairwoman 徐秋蓉 (Evelyn Hsu)‘s journey is recorded in the TAH Taiwanese Americans Oral History Project: 2025.
  • Event sponsorship — the 2004 美南夏令會 organizing note thanks THSH among the Houston groups for its financial support of the convention: 2004.
  • 2018-11-03 — THSH celebrated its 30th anniversary with an annual fund-raising dinner, corroborating a 1988 founding (2018).
  • Cultural media patron — THSH is credited among the supporters of the Taiwanese American web series Big Bah Tzangs: The Hungry Monster (with ZuZu Films, Cherry Sky Productions, the Taiwanese United Fund, and TaiwaneseAmerican.org), showing the foundation’s outreach into contemporary Taiwanese American arts: Karen Lin.
  • Language-transmission resource — the essay on the passing of the Taiwanese language lists THSH’s Houston center (houston-taiwanese.org TCC programs) among the community resources for learning Taiwanese, alongside the Taiwan Center Foundation of Greater Los Angeles: Passing Taiwanese Language. This matches THSH’s role as host of the co-housed Taiwanese Language School.
