Family Life
Kuo Shu-qing married 廖述宗 in 1960 after her mother-in-law 林瓊仙 (Lin Qiong-xian) arranged the match through a fellow townsman’s daughter. The couple raised four daughters in Chicago while 廖述宗 pursued his academic career at the University of Chicago’s Ben May Department of Molecular Biology.
Role in the Community
- Married into the 廖繼春—林瓊仙 family network that our own memoir corpus records: Our Journeys 350 (張瑞雄牧師 memoir) states that painter 廖繼春’s wife was the sister of 台大 geology professor 林朝棨, and that their son 廖述宗 — her husband — was the founding chair of NATPA (北美洲台灣人教授協會). Through this marriage she sits inside the 「豐原三傑」 (張炳松、廖五湖、林朝棨) regional network described in the same memoir.
- Her husband’s NATPA founding is commemorated in the corpus by 13. NATPA Professor Liao Shutsung Research Award 廖述宗教授研究獎金 — a community institution her family name is attached to.
- HOLD (identity, carried from TAH Archive Note): Shuching Liao 廖郭淑卿 (TAH Who’s Who, Era 1934–2015, 台中) appears to be this same person in her married-name form; romanization/era fields differ — not auto-merged.
