TAHS Founding

Charles Yang was the driving force behind the founding of the Taiwanese American Historical Society. In 2013, he organized a preparatory meeting on August 28 in Southern California, which was attended by 黃根深, 周實, 鄭炳全, 鄭英松, 王廷宜, 楊子清, 洪珠美, 陳隆, 周威霖, and others.

The founding conference was held on December 11, 2013, at the Hilton San Gabriel, where the organization was formally registered as a nonprofit public society in the United States, based in Southern California with the aim of expanding nationwide.

Founding Essay: 緣起與展望

Yang wrote the founding essay “緣起與展望” (Origins and Prospects), which outlined the five core principles (五大信念) of the “台灣精神史觀” (Taiwanese Spirit Historical Perspective) that TAHS was founded to promote:

  1. 歷史傳承 (Historical Heritage) — Taiwanese diaspora should document biographies and org histories for identity and solidarity
  2. 族群榮譽 (Ethnic Honor) — Building individual dignity is the true value of life and the basic creed of overall honor
  3. 全民團結 (National Unity) — Unity is based on people’s “harmony” — “家和為興、友和為貴、國和為天”
  4. 社會責任 (Social Responsibility) — Taiwanese Americans have dual hearts and dual responsibilities: to America and to Taiwan
  5. 前途希望 (Future Hope) — Hope is the combination of “expectation” and “confidence”

His essay argues that the Taiwanese diaspora should document biographies and org histories for identity and solidarity, and that second-generation Taiwanese Americans should network so youth feel less isolated and take pride in Taiwanese identity.

Five Principles of TAHS

Yang’s founding essay sets out five “台灣精神史觀” (Taiwanese Spirit Historical Perspective) principles:

  1. 歷史傳承 (Historical Heritage): Immigrant nations, new continent — America is the melting pot of all ethnicities. Taiwanese Americans should pass on their good culture and capable history generation after generation.
  2. 族群榮譽 (Ethnic Honor): Building individual dignity is the true value of life and the basic creed of overall honor.
  3. 全民團結 (National Unity): Unity is based on people’s “harmony.” As 蔣渭水 said: “同胞要團結，團結真有力” (Fellow countrymen, unite — unity is truly powerful).
  4. 社會責任 (Social Responsibility): Taiwanese Americans have two hearts — one for America, one for Taiwan. They have a dual responsibility.
  5. 前途希望 (Future Hope): Hope is the combination of “expectation” and “confidence.”

Health Issues and Franklin Ping Cheng

Due to physical health conditions, including two major surgeries, Charles Yang stepped aside from his role as TAHS president. Franklin Ping Cheng, who had served one year as vice-president, assumed the presidency in 2014. Yang recovered within a year and continued to help the Society, but Franklin served as president during the critical period when the 2017 yearbook was produced.

Legacy

Yang’s legacy is the establishment of TAHS as an organization dedicated to documenting Taiwanese American history and celebrating the community’s achievements. His founding essay remains the philosophical foundation of the organization.
