Green Island
Shawna Yang Ryan’s novel Green Island (《綠島》) tells the story of a Taiwanese family during the White Terror period (1950s), when political dissidents were imprisoned on Green Island (綠島) off the southeast coast of Taiwan. The novel explores themes of political persecution, family separation, and the long shadow of authoritarian rule on Taiwanese families.
The book was recognized with the 2017 American Book Awards, a prestigious literary honor that celebrates books of merit written by authors of color. This recognition placed Yang Ryan among a distinguished group of Asian American literary voices.
Writing Process
Yang Ryan spent nearly 14 years writing Green Island, from initial concept to publication in 2016 (Knopf). The seed was planted in 1999 when, at age 22, she walked past the 228 Memorial Park in Taipei and was deeply shocked by the exhibits — discovering a suppressed history she had never been taught. She returned to Taiwan in 2002 as a Fulbright Scholar to conduct research, interviewing 228 massacre survivors and their families. She also continued her Mandarin studies in Taipei over three years.
The novel’s title derives from the song “Green Island Night Song” (綠島小夜曲) and carries dual political meanings: the Green Island prison that held political prisoners, and Taiwan’s martial law era that began on May 20, 1949 and entered the “White Terror” period. The story spans three generations of the Taiwanese Cai family, weaving through the 228 Massacre, the Vietnam War, President Chiang Ching-kuo’s visit, the Sino-US diplomatic break, the Wen-shan case, the Beautiful Sunday incident, Taiwan’s lifting of martial law, and other major events.
The unnamed female protagonist — born on the day of the 228 Massacre — narrates the story in first person, covering the period from 1947 to 2013. Yang Ryan chose first-person narration and an unnamed protagonist to reflect the identity confusion many Taiwanese Americans face.
Yang Ryan’s novel was noted by the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, which published book reviews praising its prose and storytelling. A Chinese translation was published in Taiwan by 印刻出版社 in late 2016.
Teaching Career
After receiving her MFA from UC Davis, Yang Ryan taught at City College of San Francisco for eight years, then moved to Honolulu to teach creative writing at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she is now a tenured associate professor and director of the Creative Writing Program. She also taught English at several 補習班 (cram schools) while living in Taiwan.
Community Engagement
Yang Ryan has given book talks and readings at nine organizations in the Greater Los Angeles area in March 2017, including events at the Taiwan Cultural Association, the Tustin Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, and the Chinese American Cultural Center. She has spoken at events organized by the Taiwanese American Writers Association, FAPA Southern California Chapter, TAHS, the American Taiwan Research Institute, and various Taiwanese associations in Orange County and Los Angeles. At a March 2017 talk in Pasadena, she told the audience of 500-600 attendees: “This book is written for you.”
Literary Achievement
Yang Ryan’s work is part of a growing body of Taiwanese American literature that seeks to preserve and communicate the historical experiences of the Taiwanese diaspora. Her novel engages with the same history that the Taiwanese American Historical Society (TAHS) was founded to document — the political struggles, the White Terror, and the quest for identity among Taiwanese Americans.
Her appearance in the 2017 TAHS publication (菁英錄) alongside established community leaders and business figures underscores the breadth of Taiwanese American achievement — from corporate CEOs and politicians to literary artists who give voice to the community’s historical memory.
TAHS Connection
Yang Ryan’s profile in the 2017 TAHS publication was prepared by the Taiwanese American Historical Society editors (台美人歷史協會 整理), reflecting the Society’s interest in documenting the contributions of second-generation Taiwanese Americans across all fields, including the arts and literature.
