Pharmacy Career
Zheng ran Shiquan Pharmacy in San Francisco for 30 years. His pharmacy was more than just a place to fill prescriptions — it became a community gathering point where patients came not only for medication but to talk with him. Customers from diverse backgrounds, ages, and genders would line up not just to ask about health issues and complex conditions, but also to seek his advice on personal love and life struggles.
Radio Program
Zheng hosted a two-hour radio program where he discussed life philosophy with his audience. His show was popular with the community, and listeners appreciated his optimistic outlook on life despite his physical disabilities. He maintained an optimistic view of his own condition, stating: “I rarely think of myself as disabled; I just think of myself as a person with a hunchback and lame leg, and everything else is worth being grateful for.”
Philosophy on Disability
Despite his physical challenges, Zheng approached life with optimism. He reflected: “Fortunately, because of my physical condition, most of the time is spent on things I love — literature, music. Otherwise, with my lively personality and decent looks, I probably wouldn’t be able to live a steady life.”
Taiwan Independence Movement Record
TAH story-corpus memoirs in the vault describe a 鄭紹良 as a leader of the overseas Taiwan independence movement: in 1971, when Tsai Thomas (蔡同榮) resigned as chair, the third general assembly elected 鄭紹良 as chairman of the U.S. headquarters of the World United Formosans for Independence (WUFI), with 陳希寬 and 洪哲勝 as vice-chairmen (|Our Journeys 33). The same memoir lineage lists him on the organization’s central committee (|Our Journeys 81), and another memoir recalls him as the host of a 1,200-person Taiwanese People’s Conference at the New York Hilton in 1972 (|Our Journeys 70). Dr. Lin Heng-che (林衡哲) wrote a biographical memoir, 「學養深厚的台獨運動人格者—鄭紹良博士」 (2019/08), held at |My Stories 692.
Conflation flag: the WUFI chairman and the engineer employment table above (Boeing / Rockwell / McDonnell Douglas) are consistent with a single engineering figure, while the 2023 TAHS profile describes a San Francisco pharmacist and radio host. Whether these are one person with multiple careers or two namesakes is unresolved in the vault; no biography has been invented here.
Timeline & Milestones (per 林衡哲 memoir)
林衡哲’s biographical memoir 「學養深厚的台獨運動人格者—鄭紹良博士」 (reprinted in the |2023 TAHS Publication p.16; vault copy at |My Stories 692) records the independence-movement career in outline:
- Natively from Penghu; emigrated to the U.S. in 1960; M.S. civil engineering, West Virginia University; Ph.D. aeronautical/mechanical engineering, University of Washington, Seattle. (The memoir’s degree record differs from the Who’s Who education table below — recorded, not reconciled.)
- Founded the Seattle Taiwanese Students Association (西雅圖台灣同鄉會); his circle there included 沈富雄, 陳芳明, and 孫慶餘. During the 1979 美麗島 incident his behind-the-scenes organizing made the Seattle protest one of the most successful.
- 1971 — Elected chairman of the U.S. headquarters of |台獨聯盟 (UFI), averting a split after 蔡同榮’s resignation (|Our Journeys 33). On the opening day of the UN General Assembly he organized the famous chained-link (鎖鏈) demonstration before the UN building, covered with photo reports by the New York Times and other U.S. media.
- 1972 — As chairman, hosted the 1,200-person 彭明敏民眾大會 at the Madison Square Garden Hilton in New York (|Our Journeys 70): personally escorted |彭明敏 into the hall, introduced him, then led nearly 1,000 marchers to the UN plaza demanding Taiwan join the UN.
- 1974 — When 康寧祥 made his second visit to the U.S. and entered via Seattle, 鄭紹良 (living there) arranged the contact; 協志會 members 黃呈嘉 and 黃介山 drove overnight from San Francisco to Seattle just to meet him — an early knot tying overseas Taiwanese to the island’s tangwai (|Our Journeys 357, citing 張炎憲’s 鄭紹良訪談紀錄 in 戴寶村 ed., 青春.逐夢.臺灣國:開枝, 2016, pp. 53–122).
- Chairman lineage — The roster of U.S. headquarters officers of the 台灣獨立建國聯盟 (1956–1999, fourteen leaders) lists 鄭紹良 (土木) among the chairmen, after 蔡同榮 (|Our Journeys 234); the English central-committee list names him as Shao Liang Cheng (|Our Journeys 81-eng).
- Early 1980s, Southern California — After moving there, introduced 吳澧培 to 林衡哲 as a “Taiwan cultural comrade-in-arms”; helped coordinate the Chinese translation of 彭明敏’s The Taste of Freedom 自由的滋味 (translated by 莊瑞穂 under the pen-name 林美惠) and co-nurtured the 台灣出版社, which made the book a bestseller.
- Early 1980s, Los Angeles — 美麗島週報社 founding circle — A 2022 memoir-style article (reprinted from Storm Media) lists 鄭紹良 among the dozens of founders of the “美國美麗島週報社” in Los Angeles, alongside 許信良, 謝聰敏, 許丕龍, 楊加猷, 江昭儀, 陳芳明, 羅慕義, 孫慶餘 and others, which published the 美麗島週報 as a “professional” (職業革命家) anti-KMT operation in the early 1980s (article). The roster overlaps the Seattle circle (陳芳明, 孫慶餘) recorded in 林衡哲’s memoir, consistent with a single movement figure. (Secondary press reprint — attributed, not independently verified.)
