History
In 1982, Wang Gui-rong donated $1 million to establish the TAF. From 1983 onward, the foundation awarded laureates from around the world who had contributed to Taiwan’s cultural, academic, or political advancement. The award was highly regarded within the Taiwanese American community.
Name collision
A different organization of the same English name — Taiwanese American Foundation 台灣人協進會 (通稱 TAF), formed in 1980 from the Midwest Formosan Christian Foundation (MFCF, est. 1973) to run Taiwanese-American youth camps — appears in the corpus (楊遠薰 TAF history: [[articles/taiwanjustice-net/2021/20211205041636_2021_06_22_卓甫良與taf的故事--楊遠薰_f06677a469620539|TJJ 2021-06-22]]、[[articles/taiwanjustice-net/2025/20250323083207_卓甫良與taf的故事--楊遠薰_e7aad53f3e593fde|TJJ 2025-03-23 轉載]]); its founding officers include 莊明哲 (founding president) and 卓甫良. This awards foundation (王桂榮, 1982) is a separate body.
Further “TAF” acronyms in the corpus are also distinct bodies: regional scholarship bodies carrying the same English name appear as records — Taiwanese American Foundation of Boston 波士頓台美基金會 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/taiwanese-american-foundation-of-boston|TAH #17 波士頓台美基金會]]) and Taiwanese American Foundation of San Diego 聖地牙哥台美基金會 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/taiwanese-american-foundation-of-san-diego|TAH #7 聖地牙哥台美基金會]], with scholarship-award records) — whether either is a chapter of this foundation or an independent same-name body is unreconciled. TAFNC 北加州臺灣同鄉聯合會 — the Northern California federation of Taiwanese associations, whose English name became “Taiwanese American Federation of Northern California” in 2003 ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/our-journeys-350|TAH #350]]); it held a 228 Memorial Concert in 2019 (2019). A further same-name body: 大西雅圖台美基金會 (Greater Seattle Taiwanese American Foundation), the 501(c)(3) that owns the Seattle 台灣會館 — 蕭勝雄 was its first 理事長 and 劉真真 its 館長 per the Taiwan Center memoir ([[works/taiwaneseamericanhistory-org/ourjourneys30|TAH #30 西雅圖台灣會館]]); distinct from this awards foundation. TAFSD is the corresponding San Diego body — its president Prof. Kun-Mu Chen co-hosted the grand opening of the Taiwanese American Community Center of San Diego (Our Journeys 162 (EN)).
HOLD: corpus records titled “台美協進會” — 7. Taiwanese American Foundation Summer Camp 台美協進會 家庭、青少年夏令營 (2015) and 2. Miss Taiwanese American Foundation 台美小姐選拔基金會 (2014) — link this page as a subject, but their 台美協進會 usage may denote the youth-camp body rather than this awards foundation; attribution unreconciled.
Role in the Community
- Our Journeys 29 (EN) records the founding act of this foundation: Kenjohn Wang (王桂榮), after donating one million dollars, established the Taiwanese American Foundation, which awards yearly scholarships to extraordinary talents in the US and overseas; the Wang family later donated its over-20,000-square-foot Rosemead estate to the Taiwan Center. The same memoir records 李培吾 (Li Pei Wu) — a $1M donor to the Taiwanese United Fund and Chilin Foundation — being elected Chairman of the Foundation and general convener of the Taiwan Center preparatory committee.
- The foundation’s own publications are held in the corpus: TAF Magazines 雜誌 and an earlier 11 — the foundation’s own 1995 awards special issue, evidence the award ceremony ran continuously into the mid-1990s.
- 王桂榮’s wider movement record appears in the corpus as 10 (bibliographic record; which 公會 is unreconciled).
- Tsai Trong-rong’s memoir records the founder of this foundation at the 1982 Los Angeles meeting that produced FAPA: Kenjohn Wang (王桂榮), then President of the Chamber of Commerce, served as treasurer (“responsible for finances”) on FAPA’s founding executive committee alongside Ming Min Peng (honorary president), Mark Chen (WFTA president, vice-president) and Tu Chen (TAA president, organizing) — Our Journeys 65 (EN): The Birth of FAPA by Tsai Trong-rong. This places the TAF founder’s community standing in the diplomatic-organization generation of 1982, before the foundation’s own founding that same year.
- The foundation’s publication record now extends back to its first decade: 06 — a quarterly issue from 1986, evidence the foundation was already publishing within four years of its 1982 founding (earlier than the 1995/2005–2006 issues recorded above).
- 20. 王桂榮台美文教基金會得獎人名單 (2016-04-22) preserves the laureate list of the founder’s foundation. HOLD: the record’s title renders the name as 台美文教基金會 rather than 台美基金會; same Wang Gui-rong foundation, naming variant unreconciled.
- The founder’s own life record in the corpus: 10 (傳記) (biography) and 07 (retrospective, 2016-07-19) — both bibliographic records; they document how the foundation founder’s story is told back to the community.
- The founder’s cooperative-era community work predates TAF: a credit-union memoir records 王桂榮 joining the board at the 1979-02-10 annual meeting and taking over as 社長 in late 1979, holding meetings at his Holiday Inn in Montebello (Our Journeys 244) — the business-and-community standing that fed into the 1982 founding year.
- The foundation’s award record reaches back into its first decade as a published volume: 10 (傳記) — laureate biographies issued by the foundation itself, extending the corpus publication series 1986季刊 → 1993得獎人傳記 → 1995頒獎特刊 → 2005–2006 TAF雜誌 (bibliographic record only).
- The foundation’s own publication series extends further back and later than the issues listed above: 11 and 2000 — the latter a retrospective of nineteen award years, evidence the ceremony ran continuously from 1982 into 2000 (bibliographic records).
- 1982 records the foundation’s own self-description as the first Taiwanese American non-profit foundation (bibliographic record).
- The award record reaches into the sciences: 04 preserves the acceptance remarks of Prof. Ju-Shey Ho (何汝諧), laureate of the foundation’s 2001 science-and-engineering award — evidence the awards covered science and engineering by 2001.
- A 1985 roster of the founder’s circle appears in Our Journeys 186, which reproduces 台灣公論報 #369 (1985-04-15, p. 9) with a list of names including 王桂榮 alongside 賴明詔, 蔡奮鬥 and other community figures (roster attribution unreconciled).
- The founder’s own memoir is corpus-held: 01 (傳記) (bibliographic record), plus a Who’s Who entry 66. Kenjohn Wang 王桂榮. The foundation’s place among the 1980s overseas-Taiwanese association boom is listed in Our Journeys 206, which names 台美基金會 among the self-founded, independent community bodies of the era.
- The founder’s own community-historical writing is corpus primary material: 10) — 王桂榮’s band-A account of coordinating the two churches (Evangelical Formosa / Presbyterian) that produced the 1979-05-05 Taiwanese American Seniors Association, his years of $1,000 annual donations and fundraising, the 1994 “Most Donations” award, and the 1988 Flamingo Garden senior apartments opening — including his slogan “Our elderly should be taken care of by our own community; we should not rely on the U.S. government to do so.” The same episode is recalled from the seniors-association side in Our Journeys 173 (EN), which names 王桂榮 (Kenjohn Wang) among the 1988 El Monte builders and records him as the association’s honorary president.

Attribution held per the existing HOLD and the Name collision disambiguation — not merged into the awards foundation. No date/age conflicts introduced.
Note (deepen-x slice 10140600-9): the eight taiwaneseamerican.org records absorbed above continue the camp/conference-lineage pattern — two conference-program records (2010 Midwest youth conference, 2011 “The Ones” theme), Ho Chie Tsai’s own camp-founding statement from the Taiwan543.net interview (2011), a TAFNC benefit concert (2011, attribution held per the TAFNC disambiguation above), two Chicago winter events under the TAF name (2011), a contributor bio naming a TAF leader (2013), and the 2018 conference listing continuing the 2015–2017 series. Attribution held per the existing HOLD, not merged into the awards foundation. No date/age conflicts introduced.
Note (deepen-x slice 10140400-4): the eight taiwaneseamerican.org records absorbed above continue the camp/conference-lineage pattern — census-campaign co-production (2010), conference registration calls (2012, 2013), an alum contributor bio (2013), three dated conference-program listings (2015–2017), and the clearest corpus self-description of the camp body including its 1980 formation (2019). The 2019 formation date corroborates the youth-camp TAF (台灣人協進會/MFCF) already disambiguated in Name collision; attribution held per the existing HOLD, not merged into the awards foundation. No date/age conflicts introduced.
Note (deepen-x slice 10132200-4): the eight taiwaneseamerican.org records above continue the same camp/conference-lineage pattern — alumni identity (Chen, Lin, Lin Eric), conference programming (2010 tour, 2009 interview), a Chicago event under the TAF name, and the conference’s own self-description. Attribution held per the existing HOLD, not merged into the awards foundation. The 2022 Good to Eat caption is the one item that attaches a named TAF president to a date on this page’s body.
Note (deepen-x slice 10130800-4): the six taiwaneseamerican.org records absorbed above all describe the TAF Summer Conference / camp-alum lineage — consistent with the existing HOLD that this usage may denote the youth-camp TAF (台灣人協進會/MFCF) rather than this awards foundation. Attribution held, not merged.

Corpus re-check (2026-10-13, deepen-x slice 10121200-1): 5-dir grep (王桂榮 / Wang Gui-rong / Kenjohn / 台美基金會 / 台美文教基金會 / Taiwanese American Foundation) returned 120 files; previously-unlinked same-name regional bodies now recorded in Name collision — 波士頓台美基金會 (TAH #17) and 聖地牙哥台美基金會 (TAH #7, scholarship-award records), chapter-vs-independent attribution marked unreconciled. Other hits are the TAFSD/TAFNC/Seattle bodies already disambiguated above or the youth-camp TAF (existing HOLD). ourjourneys228 (FAPA 會長 roster naming 王桂榮) and ourjourneys70/26/59 (memoir mentions of 王桂榮’s 亞洲商報 / 1982 LA meeting) confirm rather than extend existing text.
