The Taiwanese Cultural Society at Stanford University (TCS) is an undergraduate student organization that celebrates and promotes Taiwanese culture at Stanford and in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The organization was formerly known as the “Taiwan Club” until 1995, when it was renamed the Taiwanese Cultural Society. It is housed within Stanford’s Asian American Activities Center (A³C) and is a member of both Stanford’s Asian American Student Association (AASA) and the Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association (ITASA).

Role in the Community

  • 2010 — named among the Taiwanese student groups driving the movement’s campus network. Ho Chie (founder of TaiwaneseAmerican.org), recounting a year of visiting campuses and conferences nationwide, lists the “Taiwanese Cultural Society (TCS) at Stanford” alongside ITASA conferences, TAF, TANG, and TAO at UC Irvine as stops where he engaged Taiwanese student activists (On Discovering Passion & Purpose, 2010-11-11).
  • 2011–2013 — Stanford Taiwanese night-market events are recorded in the community corpus. Stanford Taiwanese community events from these years (Lantern Festival Night Market, 2011-02-20, Taiwanese Night Market, 2012-05-12, Taiwanese Night Market, 2013-05-11) — the bibliographic records do not name a host organization, so attribution to TCS is plausible but unconfirmed.
  • Pre-TCS cultural soil at Stanford: before the club was renamed TCS, Bay Area movement cultural programming repeatedly used Stanford as a venue — the “Taiwanese Cultural Music Troupe” performed at Stanford in 1989 and violinist Hu Nai-yuan in 1992, per the TAFNC thirty-year review 38. TAFNC Thirty Year Review — context for why a cultural club could take root on campus by the early 1990s.
  • Graduate/professional track: the graduate-student and staff community at Stanford is documented separately at Stanford Taiwanese Student Association.
