Overview

  • 黃根深 (Huang Gen-shen) was an art teacher and the only artist among the founding members of the United Formosans for Independence (UFI) and later the United Formosans for Independence (UFAI)
  • He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Taiwan Normal College (now National Taiwan Normal University) and studied art in the United States at the University of Iowa and UCLA
  • In 1965, he arrived in the US in September; his father died in December. He sent $2,000 (his entire student bond) back to Taiwan, then worked in Los Angeles while taking classes at UCLA
  • He joined the UFI (later UFAI) in 1966 after being introduced by Lai Wen-xiong (賴文雄), a lifelong friend
  • He served as secretary and periodical publisher for the UFI’s first long-lived publication, Formosan Gram《福爾摩沙通訊》, which began monthly publication in 1966
  • He designed the UFAI logo (a triangle over a circle), illustrations, and covers for UFAI publications including the long-running magazine Wang Chun Feng《望春風》
  • He donated his artwork for UFAI fundraising auctions; some buyers did not realize the artist was him — his paintings hung in fellow activists’ living rooms
  • He remained an active member through decades of internal struggles and crises, including the 424 Chiang Ching-kuo assassination attempt, and was still a Central Committee member two years before the 2017 publication
  • He participated in all major Taiwanese American organizations: FAPA, 全美台灣人權會, 同鄉會, and helped revive the Western Taiwan Summer Camp after it had been dormant for over ten years
  • His wife was a 228 victim’s relative (王平水’s third daughter); their marriage would have been opposed by his family in Taiwan due to her father’s death in the 228 massacre
  • He was placed on the Kuomintang blacklist after a “snitch” (抓耙仔) was exposed in their organization, and his family in Taiwan was subsequently harassed
  • After the blacklist was lifted, he rarely returned to Taiwan, saying Taiwan had changed so fast it felt like “another country” — lost its “Taiwan flavor”
  • In 2017, he participated in the Overseas 228 Survivors’ Family Return to Taiwan program, organized by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Council (僑委會)
  • He expressed concern about Taiwan’s political future, urging the government to consider allowing people who wish to return to China to do so — warning that Taiwan could become a bargaining chip between great powers
  • He was described as the hardest-working member at UFAI activities: providing artwork for charity auctions, assisting Taiwanese American organizations with events, drawing cartoons and designing covers for their publications
