TPC — Taiwanese Presbyterian Churches (U.S., not PCT)

How to read the letters

Identity Snapshot

  • Type: disambiguation
  • Rule: PC + place = denomination in that country. T+PC = Taiwanese church in the U.S.

PC + place = the denomination in that country.
T + PC = Taiwanese Presbyterian Church(es) — the T is the people/language, so the building is in the U.S. (otherwise you would not need the T).

TPC 50週年 (2020) = fifty years of Taiwanese Presbyterian Churches in North America (from FPCLA 1970). Not fifty years of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (1865 / 1951).

台福 / EFC (Evangelical Formosan Church) is another U.S. family. Do not merge with FPCLA / TPC.

Strong: people and books — |黃德利 at 台灣神學院; seven Presbyterian Church in Taiwan pastors at the Good Shepherd plant; |劉炳熹 / East Gate Barclay; |潘恩盛 (Presbyterian Church in Taiwan moderator) on the Lai reprint; STM Taiwan (short-term mission); sister tie with 台北重新教會.

Weak: no shared polity. U.S. churches are Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Do not write “Good Shepherd is a Presbyterian Church in Taiwan congregation.”

Why PCT seems to be everywhere (clergy pipeline)

Almost no U.S.-raised pastors preach fluent 台語. Pulpits are filled by clergy formed in Taiwan (PCT seminaries: 台神 / 南神). When they take a U.S. call they sit under PC(USA) and the TPC / NTPC fellowship.

So: same people, new layer. PCT is origin (training, 漢名, liturgy). TPC is the U.S. workplace. That is why TAH pages say PCT and Atlanta / 洛杉磯 / FPCLA in one breath — not because the U.S. church is a PCT congregation.

Do not flatten: 台福 / EFC hires (e.g. 劉富理) are not this pipeline.

Timeline anchor

  • 1970 — |FPCLA, first of the U.S. Taiwanese Presbyterian churches
  • 2020 — TPC 50週年: fifty years of the U.S. fellowship counted from FPCLA, not from PCT (1865 / 1951)

Deepen pass 2026-09-10 (vault-only)

Detail already in the cited vault pages, absorbed here:

  • The plant itself: GSTPC was 設教 7 December 1980 in Monterey Park for 台語 worship during the 1980s immigrant wave; the first year grew from three families and seven youth to 70+ in worship and 37 youth (GSTPC40 許明遠前言). |黃德利 就任首任牧師 at the 1985 fifth anniversary; the Monterey Park building was bought in 1988 (bid against a Korean congregation after the white host church offered the property).
  • The seven PCT pastors at the plant (GSTPC40): among them |許錦銘 (Rev. J. M. Hsu) (not settled pastor); 邱以正、許文將、余裕義 later deceased; 陳獻平 later back in Taiwan. This is the clergy-pipeline layer in concrete form.
  • Same people, new layer, verified: |劉炳熹 is PCT-formed (now fifth senior pastor of |中崙教會, 七星中會, since 2026-05-31; previously |東門巴克禮紀念教會) while preaching into the U.S. TPC fellowship.
  • Boundary events keep the two clocks separate: 2022-03-06 南加州 TPC outdoor service for 馬偕博士台灣宣教150週年 (heritage link to PCT, not membership), and the 2020-06 TPC 50週年 special episodes hosted at GSTPC (|黃德利, 5 / 12 / 19 June 2020) counting from |FPCLA 1970.
  • Sister tie is Taiwan-side: 台北重新教會 (recorded on the GSTPC page; no vault page yet — do not link-flatten it to PCT polity).
