Tyzen Hsiao (蕭泰然, POJ: Siau Thài-jiân, 1 January 1938 – 24 February 2015) was a Taiwanese neo-Romantic composer, pianist, and conductor. Raised in a |PCT family in Fengshan, Kaohsiung. Lived and worked in Southern California from 1977; blacklisted by the KMT after 〈出頭天進行曲〉 (1980) until 1995 (ZH Wikipedia / TAH). Nicknamed 台灣拉赫曼尼諾夫. 〈台灣翠青〉 / “Taiwan the Green” is widely treated as an unofficial anthem; it also appears in the 1947 Overture.

Story

Tyzen Hsiao (蕭泰然), nicknamed 台灣拉赫曼尼諾夫, was born on 1 January 1938 in Fengshan, Kaohsiung, into a PCT household: his father was a dentist and church elder, his mother 林雪雲 a Japan-trained church pianist, and his grandfather 蕭基源 a 傳道師 from 台南神學院. He began piano with his mother at age 5 and performed publicly at 7; at 長榮中學 in Tainan, the principal 戴明福 persuaded his father to let him choose music over medicine. He took his music degree at 師大 in 1963, where 許常惠 steered him toward composition, studied at 武藏野音樂大學 in Japan from 1965 to 1967, and from 1967 to 1977 taught music at schools including 台南神學院. His 1971 oratorio 《耶穌基督》, built on a text by his father, opened a lifetime in which most of the catalogue became hymns and sacred song, then Taiwanese folk settings. The family moved to Atlanta in 1977 after his wife 高仁慈’s business failure and settled on in Southern California; in 1982 he co-founded 南加州台灣音樂社 and that October gave the Thanksgiving concert at Crystal Cathedral, and after 〈出頭天進行曲〉 in 1980 he was blacklisted by the KMT until 1995. His song 〈台灣翠青〉, with lyrics by 鄭兒玉, is widely treated as an unofficial national anthem, and the large-scale works — the 1947 Overture and the 2001 Ilha Formosa: Requiem — carried the same arc into the concert hall. He returned to Taiwan in 1995 when the blacklist lifted, moved back to the Los Angeles area after a stroke in 2002, and died at home there on 24 February 2015, having collected the 國家文藝獎, Golden Melody’s 特別貢獻獎 and the 行政院文化獎.
